Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Samuel Brown and the mechanics institute movement in Scotland. Born in 1799 in a family of 11, Brown lost his father at the young age of 7. He was raised by his maternal uncle, a pious and charitable man who deeply influenced the young boy. Apprenticed by his uncle to a trade at age 11, Brown's formal education effectively ended, but his curiosity and love of learning continued to grow through his own efforts and the support of friends and family. Brown's life and work exemplified the spirit of self-improvement and love of mankind that characterized the Mechanics' Institutes, where the working class could access educational opportunities that would have otherwise been unavailable to them. The author argues that these Institutes were an important force for good in 19th-century Scotland, engaging with the social issues of education, poverty, public health, and addiction. By providing a forum for discussion and a variety of learning opportunities, the Mechanics' Institutes helped to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, and to promote social mobility, economic growth, and civic engagement.
