This book delves into a remarkable collection of ancient Irish glossesââ âcommentaries on the Epistles of St. Paulââ âthat have been preserved in a manuscript in the University library of Wtirtzburg, Germany. These glosses, written in Old Irish, date back to the eighth or ninth century, making them a vital window into the intellectual and theological landscape of early medieval Ireland. The author meticulously explores these glosses, comparing them to other commentaries and highlighting their unique perspectives. The reader is invited to consider the cultural context of the time, when Ireland was a vibrant center of learning, its scholars renowned throughout Europe. The book reveals how Irish thinkers engaged with the teachings of St. Paul, drawing from diverse sources and offering a glimpse into the methods of scriptural interpretation prevalent in the era.
