Combining insights from firsthand accounts with rigorous historical research, the author paints a vivid picture of the "systematic instruction and government" for prisoners on the voyage. They explore the origins and implementation of this system, as well as its consequences for the prisoners, which ranged from improved literacy to religious conversion. Through a detailed examination of journals and logbooks from the voyage, the author sheds light on a little-known aspect of maritime history and the emergence of modern penal systems. The author concludes that, although the system was far from perfect and ultimately unsuccessful, it represented an important turning point in the history of crime and punishment.
