The San Gabriel Mission was founded in 1771 and named after the Archangel Gabr…iel, originally inland from the site it occupies today, before moving to higher ground close to the San Gabriel River a few miles inland from modern Los Angeles. The author provides an introduction to the history of the Mission, its priests and founders, the lives of Native Americans on the Mission and their relationship with Catholic missionaries, the architecture and religious observation of the Mission, the teaching of Native Americans by the Mission, and the art created there, including many paintings and images of saints given the features and appearance of the Gabrielino-Tongva tribe who lived in the area. In addition, the book discusses the political machinations which led to the secularization of the Missions in the 1830s and how their lands were then used.
