This book is a comprehensive two-volume study of the life and scientific career of Alexander von Humboldt, charting his journey from his youth and early manhood through his travels in America and Asia and finally to his life at Berlin. Composed by a team of expert scholars, with each writing on a different aspect of Humboldt's life and work, the book also includes a foreword by renowned academic Heinrich Dove. This book has a clear layout and is extensively referenced, containing not only a detailed narrative of Humboldt's life but also an examination of his scientific achievements in various disciplines, including astronomy, geology, and botany. Volume two includes numerous plates and illustrations, and there is also a catalogue of Humboldt's written works and scientific papers. Humboldt's life is examined within the context of his time, and the authors provide insights into his personal character, his relationships, and the intellectual and social forces that shaped his work. The exploration of Humboldt's time as an official at the Prussian court includes a discussion of the political and intellectual landscape of early 19th-century Berlin. The work offers a fresh look at this extraordinary figure through new source material and a nuanced interpretation of his life and work. As a result, this book is not just a valuable resource for scholars of Humboldt's life and science but also a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history of science, exploration, and the life of one of the greatest minds of the 19th century.
