ISBN: 9781332186501 - religious intercourse between ceylon and siam in the eighteenth century, vol. 18 (classic reprint): an account of king kirti sri's embassy to siam in ... from the singhalese (classic reprint) (2 Ergebnisse)

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book shares an account of King Kirti Sri Rajasimha's embassy to Siam in the 18th century. The account is a translation of a Sinhalese manuscript penned by one of the five Sinhalese ambassadors and was written as a historical record of the embassy. These ambassadors were sent to invite priests from Siam to inaugurate an ordination service, as the ordination of priests had fallen into disuse in Sri Lanka due to foreign occupation. Neither the author nor the translator is named within this excerpt. However, the translator, P. E. Pieris, MA, BarristeratLaw, provides an introduction and notes. The book's original writer was likely a member of the embassy, providing a firsthand account of the journey. The historical context is critical, as the embassy took place during a period of decline for Buddhism in Sri Lanka and was part of an effort to revitalize the religion. The journey itself is vividly described, as is the splendor of the Siamese court. The book also contains religious insights and a discussion of the importance of ordination in the Buddhist tradition. Overall, this book sheds light on the historical, religious, and cultural aspects of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and Siam during the 18th century.
