Born in London, Duff traveled to America with her husband John Duff in 1811 and rapidly rose to prominence as a leading tragedienne, challenging the reigning star of the day, Mrs. Powell. Duff was known for her beauty, intelligence, versatility, and devotion to her work, retiring early to enter religious service. She was hailed by critics as the first American-born actress to achieve greatness on the American stage. Her portrayal of Hermione in Racine's Andromaque was considered her greatest triumph and established her as a rival to the celebrated British actor Edmund Kean, who called her the greatest actress in the world. Filled with fascinating details and reviews of Duff's performances, this book is a must-have for theatre buffs and lovers of American history.
