Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book traces the history of Judge Lawrence Woodruff Halsey from his birth in 1841 to his death in 1918. Halsey was born in New York and reared in Illinois, where he attended college at Batavia Institute and later taught school. He served in the Civil War, but his brothers perished in… action. Halsey studied law at the University of Michigan and was admitted to the bar in 1865. He moved to Wisconsin and settled in Oshkosh, where he formed a partnership with Colonel H. B. Jackson. For twelve years he practiced law in Oshkosh before moving to Milwaukee in 1877. There he became a partner in the firm of Johnson, Rietbrock and Halsey. Halsey gained prominence as a lawyer, and in 1898 he was appointed counsel for the city of Milwaukee. In 1900 he was elected judge of the Second Judicial Circuit, and in 1901 he was elected to a full six-year term. He was reelected in 1907 and 1913. Halsey was also active in civic and political affairs, and he held offices in the American Bar Association, Wisconsin National Guard, and various fraternal organizations. He was a member of the Episcopal church and a founder of St. John's Home for Old People. Halsey was married to Mary Louisa Loveridge in 1866, and they had four children. His wife died in a train wreck in 1907, and Halsey was severely injured. He died in 1918, and is remembered as one of the most prominent citizens of Milwaukee.
