The author traces the history of the capitulations, a series of treaties that granted European powers special privileges and immunities within the Ottoman Empire, from their origins in the Arab era to their modification and eventual abrogation in the 19th century. The book provides insights into the legal, political, and social implications of these agreements, as well as their impact on international relations in the Mediterranean region. By examining the capitulations within the broader context of Ottoman history and European imperialism, this book sheds light on the intricate dynamics of power and diplomacy between East and West.
