Dundass as he travels westward with his companions on the perilous and transformative trail from Steubenville, Ohio to the gold fields of California in 1849. Crossing vast plains and upriver through the heart of Native American territory, their trek takes them from the relative comfort and familiarity of home into the wild heart of the American frontier. Along the way, they negotiate treacherous river crossings, scramble up steep bluffs, contend with scarcity, hunger, arduous travel, and the ever-present sense of danger from the elements and potential conflict with Native American tribes. The author's detailed descriptions and insightful reflections offer a glimpse into the motivations, struggles, and spirit of those who ventured westward to seek fortune and adventure.
