The author, a trained land surveyor, led an expedition to the region in 1886 to verify the claims of Captain Glazier, who had recently claimed to have discovered a new lake upstream of Lake Itasca, the previously accepted source of the Mississippi. The author's meticulous survey ultimately disproved Glazier's claims and confirmed the substantial accuracy of earlier surveys, including Nicollet's 1836 expedition. The book also includes a discussion of the natural phenomena that have shaped the region, including the underground passages through which some streams flow. While the book is primarily concerned with the geography of the Mississippi's headwaters, it also touches on the history of exploration in the area and the role of Native Americans in shaping its landscape. Ultimately, the book provides a valuable historical record of the exploration of the Mississippi River and a detailed account of the natural features of its headwaters.
