While studying at the Royal Academy, Stothard shifted his focus to monumental antiquities. This decision stemmed from his fascination with ancient British history and a desire to explore the role of art in illustrating it. His belief that the study of monumental effigies could enrich historical understanding and art led him to embark on a comprehensive project to document and analyze these artifacts.
