This book contains transcripts and letters from English Catholics who travelled to Rome in 1602 to negotiate with Pope Clement VII, seeking his intervention to address internal disputes concerning the authority of the Archpriest George Blackwell over the mission in England. This dispute had been ongoing since Blackwell's appointment in 1598. The delegation hoped to find a resolution within the Church, which would allow them to focus on their collective mission of ministering to persecuted English Catholics. The records in this book provide unique insights into the ecclesiastical politics of the late Elizabethan period, the difficulties faced by the English mission and the desire among the priests for episcopal oversight. This book will captivate readers with its fascinating and unique perspective on one of the key moments in English Catholic history.
