The book's keen observations capture the anxieties and complexities of the Church's evolving role in a rapidly modernizing society. The author's satirical wit shines through as he lampoons the foibles and idiosyncrasies of different clerical types, from the ambitious opportunist to the self-righteous moralist, the scholarly recluse to the charismatic preacher.
