Written in 1729, the sequel incited controversy and a media storm, being banned from the stage by Walpoleâs Lord Chamberlain. This fascinating literary analysis sets the work within its dramatic, political, and social context, exploring the personal and social dynamics at play in the creation of the work and the scandal that followed. Examining themes such as censorship, satire, and artistic freedom, the book shows how Polly is both a product and a critique of its time, and sheds light on the relationship between art and politics in the 18th century. Ultimately, this book showcases the significance of Polly as not only a theatrical sensation but a powerful commentary on the limits and possibilities of artistic expression. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
