The scale -insect is a pest that can severely impact fruit harvests, with the author describing in detail the negative impact the scale -insect had on the 1904 Connecticut peach and plum harvest. Winter injury to trees from the elements also significantly hurt that year's harvest, and the author includes observations about these impacts to orchards. A key portion of the book is dedicated to explaining various mixtures growers can spray on their trees to kill the scale -insects. The author describes the specific steps, materials, and mixtures used for each method, as well as the effectiveness of each.
