This book examines reformation-era claims that the practice of confession and absolution shifted from being a primarily public ministry to a secretive, private one. The author argues that reformers relied on scripture and the church's earliest practices to reclaim the original intent of these spiritual tools. They believed that private confession should be paired with public or special confession, aimed at restoring the penitent to the church community. By tracing the theological evolution of confession and absolution through this period of seismic religious change, the author paints a vivid picture of reformers' dedication to restoring early Christian practices. The insights provided in this book are especially pertinent to ongoing discussions about the place of private confession in contemporary religious life.
