This book is a collection of designs, calculations, and discussions of three proposed plans for a bridge across the East River spanning from New York City to Long Island. In 1875, a board of consulting engineers was appointed and presented with eleven sets of design proposals. After exte…nding the deadline for submissions, nine more were received. The report ultimately examines the plans submitted by Mr. L.W. Wright, the Cincinnati Bridge Company, Messrs. Clarke, Reeves & Co., the Delaware Bridge Company, and Henry Flad & Co., carefully analyzing and comparing each design. The most salient feature of the prospective bridge is the necessity for two 734 foot and one 618 foot spans to accommodate the busy shipping lanes below. The submissions included suspension bridges, cantilever designs, and a unique hinged arch bridge plan from the engineers behind the famous St. Louis bridge. The report ultimately recommends the hinged arch design by Clarke, Reeves & Co., praising its structural integrity and economy. The book presents a historical snapshot of bridge building techniques in the late 19th century and the engineering challenges faced during the period.
