Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the administrative history of the Paris police department from the foundation of the revolutionary-era institution in 1800 to the mid-19th century. The author argues that, though the stated purpose of the Paris police was to keep the peace, the institution was often used as a political tool to stifle dissent and silence the critics of the ruling regime. Ultimately, he believes the inherent corruption of the institution made it impossible for the Paris police to fulfill its duties effectively and fairly.
