Hardback. Zustand: New. The first monograph on Lewis' sculptural practice inspired by the material inventiveness of Afro-Atlantic diasporic traditionsPublished with Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. This is the first monograph dedicated to the sculptural practice of the Canadian artist Tau Lewis (born 1993). Lewis transforms… found materials into intricate soft sculptures, quilts, masks and other assemblages through intensive processes such as hand sewing and carving. A self-taught artist, Lewis' practice is directed at healing personal, collective and historical traumas through the repetitive forms of creative labor she employs. She forages for materials charged with meaning-old clothing and photographs, as well as driftwood and seashells-which she often collects from her surroundings in Toronto, New York or outside her family's home in Negril, Jamaica. Lewis' upcycling relates to forms of material inventiveness practiced by diasporic communities, wherein working with objects close at hand is a reparative act to reclaim agency. Throughout, Lewis' interest lies in honoring and advancing these diasporic traditions and exploring, as she has said, "the transference of energy and emotion that occurs when an object is made by hand.".

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: None, As Issued. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 79 pages. Published in 2024. Retrospective Exhibition Monograph. The best book thus far on the art and achievement of Tau Lewis. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent edi…tions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of her eponymous exhibition in 2024. Presents "Tau Lewis". Massive, imaginatively and elaborately constructed stuffed dolls, masks, and talismans through which Tau Lewis conjures up the African Diaspora in her very own visual language that remains rooted in African ethnic art. "A Jamaican-Canadian artist working in a variety of mediums including hand-sewn, carved, and assemblage pieces, her environmentally-conscious use of reclaimed scraps and other found materials connects with African histories of resourcefulness. Lewis creates, from salvaged textiles and other found materials, anthropomorphic forms inspired by Yoruba mask dramas, which are spiritually activated by the wearer and the audience and by extension, their community. Referencing the work of the Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka, Classical Greek drama and Roman mythology, yet also science fiction and even angelology, Lewis develops her characters' identities and narratives in an intermediary world that implicates our ancestral pasts, spiritual and cultural similitudes, and multiplanar existence" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Tau Lewis collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the half-title page by Tau Lewis. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art book classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Exhibition Monograph available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws ("Very Good"). This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with dazzling color plates. One of the most brilliant visual artists of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 1636811434. Signed by Author.
