Alice breaks free from Harriet's life and follows her own career as an author living in Sydney. Harriet sells up and follows Alice. Alice is found dead in her bed at age 37 and suspicions fall upon the powerful chauvinistic scientist, John McGarvie Smith with whom Alice had been working in her newfound role as a journalist. Alice's friends leave a public accusation on her gravestone, a clue for a future woman to bring justice. The author wrote the words 'imagined history' in the book title because there is very little actual detailed history on Alice and Harriet.
