Nous sommes au moment où cette réponse se révèle aussi fausse, dans sa demi-vérité, que la philosophie antérieure. Tout est à reprendre. C'est le problème fondamental de l'école d'aujourd'hui, plongée dans une incertitude complète sur la nature de l'opération qu'il lui revient d'effectuer. C'est le problème que ce livre s'efforce d'éclairer. D'abord, en dégageant les origines historiques de ce nouveau modèle pédagogique. Ensuite, en en montrant par plusieurs exemples les limites. Enfin et surtout, en instaurant une réflexion sur cette expérience primordiale dont les adultes refoulent le souvenir: la difficulté d'apprendre, qui ne se sépare pas de la nécessité d'une transmission. À quelles conditions, de quelle manière, par quels dispositifs, une telle transmission est-elle possible Il ne s'agit pas ici d'apporter des solutions toutes faites, mais de contribuer à dessiner le cadre d'une entreprise nécessaire de refondation.
