VIII, 155 S., broschiert. Zustand: Wie neu. Einband leicht berieben. - One of Madela's central themes is the deterioration of Zulu tradition. He considers the loss of tradition as the cause of most of the misfortunes which have befallen the Zulu people. The reign of Shaka (1816-28) is repeatedly mentioned as the beginning, or one of the causes, of this loss of tradition. Shaka is also seen as the incorporation of all the evils that appeared after the "death that was asked for". Madela's view of Shaka as a power-crazed tyrant has been more or less shared by most analysts, althought his talent as a statesman and military genius has also been recognized. Shaka was born in 1787. He served under Dingiswayo and was made chief of the Zulu in 1816. He reorganized the army, introduced new weapons and strategies, and quickly destroyed or incorporated the smaller tribal groups around him. Fleeing from his armies, the tribes of the coastal region were driven to the inlands. This resulted in civil wars which disrupted the whole tribal system, and left the land virtually open for the Boer Great Trek (1835-37). Shaka maintained internal discipline and control in his empire by a system of rigorous punishments, and seemingly random acts of terror. In 1828, Skaka was assassinated by his half-brothers Dingane and Mhlan-gana. His empire lasted until 1879, when it was destroyed by the English. The last independent ruler of the Zulu empire was Cetswayo (1872-1884).Mvelinquangi or Nkulunkulu is generally described as a creator god, who does not take active part in the daily life of humans. Madela however has a special relationship to this deity, since the god appeared to him in several visions and ordered him to record his traditional knowledge. The myth of creation is a central part of Madela's work. Many of his beliefs and explanations cannot be understood without reference to "the death that was asked for". In particular, Mvelinquangi's role in the loss and recreation of the traditions must be seen in this context. ISBN 9783496007142 Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.…
