He wrote a number of books, articles and gave a lot of lectures presenting the teachings of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition in a philosophical manner, trying to make them more accessible and acceptable to the Western-educated mind. One can say that while Srila Prabhupada (the movement's founder) presented the theological basis of the Gaudiya Vaishnava doctrine, the problem was that his presentation was more of a traditional Hindu style and not very much intellectually satisfying for the contemporary Western reader. What Suhotra Swami did in his books was to rectify this situaction and present the Gaudiya teaching in the manner of of Western philosophy. "Substance and Shadow" presents the limitations and problems of contemporary Western methods of acquiring knowledge and provides the "Vedic method" as an alternative. The books is very useful for the Hare Krishna followers who want to acquire a strong philosophical motivation of their faith, however for an outsider the presentation might seem a bit biased and one-sided, since it is based on one of many Vedic religio-philosophical schools, i.e. Gaudiya Vaishnavism. On the other hand, the book may be enormously useful for all scholars studying the Gaudiya Vaishnavism and Hinduism in general. The book is thought-provoking as it provides an interesting discussion of many major philosophical problems in a clear and understandable way so it can be useful even to a non hare krishna reader.…
