Although it was raised to conductsmall-scale raids and harass garrisons along the coast ofGerman-occupied France, it was mainly employed as a highly-trainedinfantry assault unit. The unit's first operation was the successfulraid on the Lofoten Islands in March 1941. The next two plannedoperations were both cancelled and it was not until 1942, that No. 4Commando took part in another raid. That was Operation Abercrombie, araid on the French coastal town of Hardelot. Later the same year No. 4Commando was one of three commandos, selected for the Dieppe raid. Underthe command of Lord Lovat, No. 4 Commando landed on the right flank ofthe main landings and successfully silenced a German gun battery.
