It is run at Deauville over adistance of 3,000 metres (about 1¿ miles), and it is scheduled to takeplace each year in August. The event was originally called the Prix dela Société d'Encouragement. It was named after a former governing bodyof horse racing in France, the Société d'Encouragement pourl'Amélioration des Races de Chevaux en France. The inaugural runningtook place on August 14, 1864, and it was part of the first ever racemeeting to be held at Deauville. The distance was initially set at 3,000metres (equal to the present length), and the prize money for thewinning owner was 5,100 francs.
