Nato a Filadelfia (Pennsylvania) nel 1890, Emmanuel Radnitsky, detto Man Ray (come in un raggio di luce), ha partecipato attivamente ai circoli intellettuali e artistici di New York, scoprendo le avanguardie europee e stringendo amicizia con Marcel Duchamp che gli apre le porte del dadaismo e lo accoglie a Parigi nel luglio del 1921. Al centro della vita artistica parigina, ha partecipato agli innovativi esperimenti dei dadaisti e dei surrealisti, incontrando pittori, poeti e intellettuali e diventando famoso per i suoi ritratti. Affermatosi anche come fotografo di moda, in particolare per i designer Paul Poiret ed Elsa Schiaparelli, fu uno sperimentatore instancabile: riprese la tecnica dei "fotogrammi" (sagome astratte di oggetti) che Tristan Tzara chiamò "rayographs" e nel 1929, con il suo nuovo socio Lee Miller, sviluppò la tecnica della "solarizzazione". Tornato nel 1940 negli Stati Uniti, incontra Juliet Browner, che diventa sua moglie e musa ispiratrice. Di nuovo a Parigi nel 1951, vi visse fino alla sua morte nel 1976. Man Ray è noto per aver rivoluzionato l'arte della fotografia, ma è stato anche pittore, disegnatore, assemblatore di oggetti, scultore, scrittore e regista.
