On 1st October, 1923, HMS Vernon (or 'The Vernon' as it came to be known) was established ashore on the site of the old Gunwharf (now the development known as Gunwharf Quays) and Mining, Whitehead [Torpedo] and Electrical departments were formed. The original names of the Vernon hulks were adopted for buildings in the shore base. During the Second World War, HMS Vernon became responsible for mine disposal and mine countermeasures.
