Manuskript / Papierantiquität
Hardcover. - Zu Hermann Finsterlin siehe u.a.: Reinhard Döhl. Hermann Finsterlin. Eine Annäherung. Ausstellungskatalog Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. -- Finsterlin, Hermann. Architectural visionary, designer, painter, poet, and essayist (1887-1973). "Kaleidoskop der Liebe" (calligraphic title on front cover). No place, 1920 (one watercolour drawing dated 1918). 12 signed original watercolour drawings over pen- and brush outlines. Various sizes, (ca 234 x 300 mm to 262 x 345 mm) pasted onto white cardboards with manuscript captions in lower margins. Loosely contained in artist s portfolio with cloth spine, boards lined with an elaborate multiple colour paste paper design, front cover with a nicely calligraphed title in white body colour. Folio (394 x 325 mm). Four ties of which 3 torn. (Reinhard Döhl. Hermann Finsterlin. Eine Annäherung; Exhibition Catalogue Staatsgalerie Stuttgart 1988). Herman Finsterlin was an influential champion of the expressionist architecture movement in Germany of the early 20th century. His erotic drawings are congenial side pieces to his famous architectural concepts. Finsterlin was a wanderer between the aesthetic worlds and artistic styles, who proved to be far ahead of his time. After founding a free group of artists in Schwabing, he turned to mythological and fairy-tale themes around 1918, probably under the influence of anthroposophy. In 1919 Walter Gropius asked him to present the designs of his dream houses in an exhibition, and in the same year he became a member of the Gläserne Kette. In 1921 he designed the Stilspiel for architects and a Baukasten für Zukunfts-Stil before he moved to Stuttgart in 1926. In 1930, he gave lectures at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Almost all of his architectural drawings remained drafts and were not realized but could be summarised as: 1. Distortion of form for an emotional effect. 2. Often hybrid solutions, irreducible to a single concept. 3. Subordination of realism to symbolic or stylistic expression of inner experience. 4. Themes of natural romantic phenomena, such as caves, mountains, lightning, crystal and rock formations. As such it is more mineral and elemental than florid and organic which characterized its closeness to contemporary Art nouveau style. 5. Conception of architecture as a work of art. Our portfolio contains the following watercolour drawings (numbers in brac.

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Endless Enigma takes as its point of departure Alfred H. Barr Jr.'s legendary 1936 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Fantastic Art, Dada, Surrealism, which not only introduced these movements to the American public, but also placed them in a historical and cultural context by situating them with artists from earlier centuries.Presenting works from the twelfth century to the present day, this catalogue is organized into six themes-Monsters & Demons, Dreams & Temptation, Fragmented Body, Unconscious Gesture, Super Nature, and Sense of Place. Works included range from medieval gargoyles to twentieth-century works by Louise Bourgeois, Sigmar Polke, and Pablo Picasso as well as contemporary works by Michael Borremans, Marcel Dzama, and Raymond Pettibon. Masterworks from the likes of Piero di Cosimo, Francisco de Goya, and Titian are considered alongside those by William Blake and Odilon Redon. Time folds and temporal barriers collapse when Damiano Cappelli meets Edvard Munch, and Salvator Rosa encounters Luc Tuymans and Lisa Yuskavage. Salvador Dali, Sherrie Levine, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Kerry James Marshall-eight centuries intersect and, as such, this wide-ranging catalogue examines affinities in intention and imagery between works executed across a broad span of time.Organized in collaboration with Nicholas Hall, a specialist in the field of Old Masters and nineteenth-century art, this fully illustrated catalogue is published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition at David Zwirner, New York, in 2018. It includes new scholarship by Dawn Ades, Olivier Berggruen, and J. Patrice Marandel.
