Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 111+[1 ad] pages with frontispiece, diagrams, tables, photographs and index. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Introduction by Tim Redman. Signed by Larry Christiansen. (Lusis: 1890) First edition. The 1980 United States Closed Chess Tournament was held at Thiel College. This championship was sharply defined by the battle between two chess generations, that of the forties and that of the Fischer era of the late sixties and early seventies. Bisguier, Byrne and Evans met the new stars, Browne, Christiansen and Seirawn. The old guard held its own. Also this tournament saw the participation of three russian emigres, who had expressed their intention of remaining in this country. Mark Diesen suffered a bad fall after the third round, and after treatment at Greenville hospital was forced to withdraw and his score was not considered in the results. The contest ended in a three way tie for first place with Larry Evans, Walter Browne and Larry Chistiansen with +7 1/2. closely behind for fourth and fifth tie was Yasser Seirawan and Leonid Shamkovich with +7. Anatoly Lein and Vitaly F Zaltsman were next with scores of 6 points. Eight through thirteenth was a tie between Peters, Byrne, Bradford, Benko, Blylasas and Bisguier at +5. Condition: Singed on half title else near fine. Signed by Author(s).
