First US edition, first printing, of one of the great classics of both American and children's literature, an exceptional, bright copy. This copy has the relevant first printing points: at p. 9 the misprint "Decided" for "Decides", at p. 13 the erroneous page reference "88" for the plate "Him and Another Man", and at p. 57, line 23, the misprint "with the was" for "with the saw". These are the only points to distinguish between the first two printings; other textual variants between copies are due to the use of multiple plates and have no relevance for priority. This copy has the first state frontispiece with the table cloth visible and unsigned on the finished edge of the bust, the second state title leaf with altered copyright page (as always save for advance copies; here integral, also found as a cancel - copies already sewn had a leaf cancelled, those unsewn with the gathering replaced), and pages 283/4 with the later state emended illustration of Uncle Silas (as always with cloth copies; here integral, also found as a cancel, ditto as before). These points do not have bearing on priority of issue, nor does the binding (other copies being bound in leather, and in blue cloth), with the whole of the first and second printings issued on the same day in February 1885. The UK edition was published first, for copyright reasons, in December 1884. BAL 3415; Grolier, 100 American, 87; Johnson, pp. 43-50; Kevin MacDonnell, "Huck Finn among the Issue-Mongers", Firsts; The Book Collector's Magazine, Volume 8, Number 9 (September 1998), pp. 28-35. Square octavo. Original green pictorial cloth blocked in black and gilt, spine and front cover in lettered in gilt and black. Housed in a custom green morocco-entry slipcase and cloth jacket. Photogravure frontispiece of Karl Gerhardt's portrait bust of Clemens, 173 text illustrations after E. W. Kemble. Leather bookplate of George Staehle to front pastedown, pencilled ownership signature dated 1898 to front free endpaper. Other than very minor peripheral wear a bright, fresh, and square copy, cloth and contents clean, joints and hinges intact.

Zustand: Near Fine. First American edition. A solid, Nearly Fine copy of the book, with no repairs or restoration. Spine gilt a bit dulled and slight rubbing at the spine ends and corners. Cloth generally fresh and bright and in excellent condition internally. Contemporary gift inscription on the front paste-down dated "May 18, 1885." With all three generally accepted first printing points and the frontis bust of Twain in the first state. A copy in Fine condition made $52,920 at Christies in 2023. Housed in custom quarter-leather clamshell over marbled boards. Recounting the adventures of Huckleberry Finn as he flees his own abusive father and aids Jim in his escape from slavery, Twain's novel has been praised for its "distinctly American voice," putting at its center two common people who find an uncommon friendship. "Today perhaps the novel's greatest significance lies in its conception of childhood, as a time of risk, discovery, and adventure. Huck is no innocent: He lies, steals, smokes, swears, and skips school. He accepts no authority, not from his father or the Widow Douglas or anyone else. And it is the twin images of a perilous, harrowing odyssey of adventure and perfect freedom from all restraints that so many readers find entrancing" (Mintz). A metaphor for a young and rebellious nation, as well as its individualist inhabitants, Huckleberry Finn defies genre by being simultaneously an adventure story, a road novel, a coming of age tale, an expression of nostalgia for the expansive natural spaces lost to industrialization, and an exploration of race and class. Listed on the American Scholar 100 Best American Novels and one of the 100 Best Novels Written in English. BAL 3415. MacDonnell, 31. Near Fine.

Hardcover. Zustand: Collectible: Very Good. First Edition. Publisher's original 1/2 leather, with page edges, pastedowns, and endpapers all marbled. One of just 500 copies printed (Raptis Rare Books, internet article, March 2014) and comes with a copy of the infamous "priapic plate", one of 100 proof copies made by Merle Johnson from an original leaf from an unbound copy found in the collection of Willard S. Morse.///LAID in is a hand written response, declining an invitation, on a folded Quarry Farm labeled note, dated "Sept. 17/03", and SIGNED, "S. L. Clemens". (Quarry Farm was the home of Susan Langdon Crane, sister of Mark Twain's wife Olivia, and often the summer residence of the Twains. Mark Twain wrote, at least in part, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn while at Quarry Farm). The note sheet was created with a fold to yield 4 writing surfaces although this message is confined solely to the letterhead panel; The note was then manually folded, horizontally. It was written 5 weeks prior to the Twain family leaving for Italy and was penned during the last summer they spent together at Quarry Farm, as Olivia died in Italy the following June. ///CONDITION OF THE NOTE: Very good-near fine, with a touch of toning, faint soiling, two miniscule specks on the letterhead panel, the faint horizontal crease, and light peeling on the rear panel where it had been affixed to some other surface. ///CONDITION OF THE BOOK: The spine and corners have been professionally restored (corners still showing the bumped tips) and the marbled surfaces have some scratches and nicks. Interior condition problems: 1.) The pastedown/endpaper hinges have been reinforced, 2.) the front endpaper has a 1/8"x 1/4" upper corner chip, 3.) there is scattered light foxing on the front and rear the preliminary pages, 4.) leaves 3-18 have areas of (food?) staining heaviest on page 17 with bleeding back to the copyright page and finally vanishing on page 36, 5.) the bottom corner of page 23-24 has a 1/2"x7/8" chip. 6.) the rest of the text has occasional soiling, some perimeter stains, a few tipped corners, one dog-eared page, and most pages have light perimeter toning. ///ISSUE POINTS: The tissue guarded front plate is second state with no cloth visible under the bust. The title/copyright leaf is integral (lack of uniform opinion on this point), "Him and another man" is incorrectly listed at page 88 (instead of page 87 where it appears), page 57 has "with the was" on line 11 from the bottom, page 143 is missing the "l" in "Col." (which is part of the illustration at the top line of the text) and has the broken "b"in "body" on line 7, the final 5 of page 155 is lacking (again, lacks consensus), the illustration on page 283 is bound in with the noticeable curve on the fly of Silas Phelp's trousers, and the final leaf is blank. ///CONDITION OF THE PROOF PLATE: The plate is lightly toned and there are some creases, and a small hole (1/8" x 1/16") on the right edge; repaired on the verso with a small piece of tape. ///OVERALL: in spite of the aforementioned flaws, this is a very good and quite scarce 130 year old volume. Several of these leather bound copies are in university and library collections, while others have surely been destroyed or lost, leaving precious few for private collections. Signed.

Hardcover. First Edition. First Printing. Publisher's library binding of full sheep, the scarcest of the bindings for this title, here very skillfully rebacked retaining the original leather spine labels. With 174 illustrations by E. W. Kemble. BAL 3415. Earliest issue for four points of BAL's seven points and with McBride's point. Recent Twain scholarship convincingly establishes three changes from the printing plates of the first printing of 30,000 copies and later printings: 1) an erroneous page reference "88" on page 13 later changed to "87" (BAL's point 2); 2) the misprint "with the was" on page 57 later corrected to "with the saw" (BAL's point 3); and 3) the misprint "Decided" on page 9 later changed to "Decides" (not noted by BAL). This copy has all three first printing points as well as most of the earliest points for BAL, lacking only the conjugate title page and having the conjugate page 283 with the vertical fly and the frontispiece with the credit to Heliotype but without the scarf. Hinges tight. Internally a very clean copy and very unusual as such. Light wear to corners, faint tape stains to boards. Near Fine.

Zustand: Very good plus. First edition. First printing, in the most uncommon form: bound in the publisher's full sheep. Twain often had ambitious plans for the publication of his books, as well as the ability to execute them through his own publishing firm, Charles L. Webster and Company, run by his nephew-in-law. Anticipating brisk Christmas-season sales, they planned four bindings for this informal sequel to TOM SAWYER: one in green pictorial cloth (the most common); one in blue pictorial cloth (to match TOM SAWYER); and two deluxe bindings: half morocco (goatskin) and sheep. Of the four bindings, the fewest copies were bound in sheep, estimated at around 2500 copies - though "they rarely survive in numbers proportional to the number that were originally bound" (Mac Donnell). The sheep copies were also among the earliest bound: most of the presentation copies from Twain are found in sheep. Because sheepskin notoriously takes wear more easily than other binding leathers like goat and calf, it is exceptionally difficult to find nice copies. 8.5'' x 6.5''. Original full sheep, leather labels on spine in black and red. Illustrated by E.W. Kemble with 174 black and white drawings. Page [9] with "Huck Decided"; page 13 lists "Him and another man" as on page 88; page 57 prints "with the was" (ref. Mac Donnell). 366 pages. Housed in custom half goatskin box. Hinges professionally repaired, some restoration to leather, scattered foxing, binding rubbed but sound.

First edition. First Issue. With 174 black and white illustrations by E.W. Kemble. Large 8vo, original publisher's sheep binding with the red and black lettering labels on the spine. It is estimated that only 2500 copies were issued in this binding. 366 pp. A very pleasing and handsome copy. Light, expert and unobtrusive refurbishment to the joints. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND GREATEST BOOKS IN AMERICAN LITERATURE. A very handsome copy with the following earliest setting states as listed by BAL: "Him and another Man" is listed at page 88, BAL's first state; page 57, eleventh line from the bottom reads ".with the was.," BAL's first state; page 155 with final 5 "stamped in" by hand (see Underhill), and matching the original font in the setting of the page number (no priority, occurring randomly in all three states independent of other major signs of first printing sheets, but this setting seems to appear least often); the portrait frontispiece is in BAL's first state, "heliotype" imprint on the portrait frontispiece, title page with 1884 copyright on verso, p.9: the heading for Chapter 6 reads "Decided" (later corrected to "Decides"), p.143: "I" in "Col." (line 1) missing and "b" in "body" (line 7) broken, p. 161: signature mark "11" is missing, final leaf is a blank. Very rare with this many first issue points. The sheep bindings are generally in poor condition, but this copy is still quite nice. Along with Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn is considered the stepping stone to modern American literature. And along with Tom Sawyer, for the first time, the hero of the novel was a boy. These books are landmarks and Hemingway often offered his opinion that the modern novel would have been impossible without them. With Whitman s Leaves of Grass and Melville s Moby Dick, they provide us with a view of America transcending its past and beginning its future.

First edition, first issue of Mark Twainâ s masterpiece. Octavo, original publisherâ s decorated green cloth, with 174 illustrations by Edward W. Kemble. Contains all of the agreed upon first issue points for the clothbound book: page 9 with â Decidedâ remaining uncorrected (to â Decidesâ ); page 13, illustration captioned â Him and another Manâ listed as on page 88; page 57, 11th line from bottom reads â with the was,â instead of â with the sawâ . Other points of bibliographical interest included in this copy are the frontispiece portrait with the cloth table cover under the bust, bearing the Heliotype Printing Co. imprint; copyright page dated 1884; page 143 with â lâ missing from â Col.â at top of illustration and with broken â bâ in â bodyâ on line seven; page 155 with a larger final â 5â ; page 161, no signature mark â 11â . As to issue points resulting from damaged plates (e.g. the dropped â 5â on p 155), MacDonnell concludes, â they are of no significance in determining the sequence of the printing of the sheets. All of these occur at random in relation to each other within copies of the first printing, a strong indicator of the use of multiple plates, and possibly mixed sheets within the collating processâ (â Huck Finnâ Firsts Magazine). In very good condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Twain initially conceived of the work as a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer that would follow Huckleberry Finn through adulthood. Beginning with a few pages he had removed from the earlier novel, Twain began work on a manuscript he originally titled Huckleberry Finn's Autobiography. Twain worked on the manuscript off and on for the next several years, ultimately abandoning his original plan of following Huck's development into adulthood. He appeared to have lost interest in the manuscript while it was in progress, and set it aside for several years. After making a trip down the Hudson River, Twain returned to his work on the novel. Upon completion, the novel's title closely paralleled its predecessor's: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). Twain composed the story in pen on notepaper between 1876 and 1883. Paul Needham, stated, "What you see is [Clemens'] attempt to move away from pure literary writing to dialect writing." For example, Twain revised the opening line of Huck Finn three times. He initially wrote, "You will not know about me", which he changed to, "You do not know about me", before settling on the final version, "You don't know about me, without you have read a book by the name of 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer'; but that ain't no matter." The revisions also show how Twain reworked his material to strengthen the characters of Huck and Jim, as well as his sensitivity to the then-current debate over literacy and voting. Ernest Hemingway once declared about The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, "All modern literature comes from one book by Mark Twain. Itâ s the best book weâ ve had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing since.".

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. E. W. Kemble (illustrator). First American Edition, First Issue. 366, [2] pages. One Hundred and Seventy-for Illustrations (per title page). Some endpaper discoloration. Some cover/corner wear, and soiling. Pencil notation on fep and rep verso, and on Notice page. "Notice. Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot. By Order of the Author per G. G. Chief of Ordnance." Also includes: Explanatory. In this book a number of dialects are used, to wit: the Missouri Negro dialect; the extremest form of the backwoods South-Western dialect; the ordinary "Pike-County" dialect; and four modified varieties of this last. The shadings have not been done in a hap-hazard fashion, or by guess-work; but pains-takingly, and with the trustworthy guidance and support of personal familiarity with these several forms of speech. I make this explanation for the reason that without it many readers would suppose that all these characters were trying to talk alike and not succeeding. The Author. Edward Winsor Kemble (January 18, 1861 - September 19, 1933), usually cited as E. W. Kemble, and sometimes referred to incorrectly as Edward Windsor Kemble, was an American illustrator. He is known best for illustrating the first edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He became the major political cartoonist for the New York Daily Graphic while receiving his only formal artistic training at the Art Students League of New York. His lively cartoons attracted the attention of Mark Twain, who employed Kemble to illustrate Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 - April 21, 1910), known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was lauded as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature". His novels include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". First Edition (Green Cover): The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The first American edition of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published in 1885 by New York's Charles L. Webster and Company, Twain's own publishing house. The book was originally scheduled for release in December 1884, but problems with printing and illustrations delayed the U.S. release until 1885, which angered Twain as he hoped it would be available for the Christmas shopping season. This edition features 174 black and white illustrations from American illustrator E.W. Kemble, whom Twain personally commissioned for the project. Earliest printings of this edition feature a dark green cloth cover and binding with a cartoon-esque likeness of Finn standing in front of a picket fence. Whereas the green covered iteration is referred to as a first edition, first issue, the blue covered version is commonly known simply as a first edition. Charles L. Webster and Company, run by Twain's nephew, Charles Webster, published the first American edition of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in 1885. An estimated 20,000 copies were issued in cloth, most of them being green and about 1 in 20 issued in blue, if requested by the subscriber. Another 2500 were issued in sheepskin and 500 copies in three-quarter leather. There are three universally-agreed upon issue points that discern a cloth first edition copy of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from a later edition. The heading for Chapter VI (6) on the first contents page (p.9) reads "Huck Decided to Leave." In later editions, this was changed to "Huck Decides to Leave." On page 13, the Illustrations list, "Him and another Man" is incorrectly listed at page 88. On page 57, eleven lines from the bottom, it reads "with the was" which was changed in later editions to "with the saw." All three points are present in this copy. The copyright should state 1884, with the title page stating 1885. This is as it is with this copy.

First Edition, First Issue of Mark TwainÕs masterpiece. Octavo, blue pictorial cloth binding. With the armorial bookplate of book collector L.M. Kaufman designed by Artemis. A 19th Century vintage ownership inscription from Los Angeles, California on front free endpaper. Very good tight copy. Enclosed in a gilt-stamped morocco and cloth slipcase. Some excellent reinforcement at extremities by an expert book conservationist. Subscribers who had already purchased Tom Sawyer, and wanted a matching binding, were invited to request a blue cloth binding for Huckleberry Finn instead of the publisherÕs original green. This is one of those blue bindings, twenty times more rare than the green. Copies were assembled rather haphazardly by the printer and there is yet to be full agreement among bibliographers as to the priority of some of them. With the following B.A.L. first issue points: page 9 with ÒDecidedÓ remaining uncorrected to ÒDecidesÓ; page 13 illustration captioned ÒHim and another ManÓ listed as on page 88; and page 57 the 11th line from the bottom reads Òwith the wasÓ, the frontispiece portrait shows the bust of Twain on a cloth covered table, page 143 with ÒlÓ missing from ÒCol.Ó at the top of the illustration and with a broken ÒbÓ in ÒbodyÓ on line 7; page 155 with the final 5 being slightly larger than the first two, and page 283, the leaf is a cancel. Debate continues over the priority of other points of issue and state. All in all, a beautiful copy. Ernest Hemingway once proclaimed about The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: ÒAll modern literature comes from one book by Mark Twain. It is the best book weÕve had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing since.Ó.

Leather binding. B&W Illustrations (illustrator). First Edition, 1st Printing. 366pp. Some minor marks to boards else a beautiful copy of the rare (200 copies) sheepskin bound first edition. This is a beautiful copy with no restoration necessary to the rather fragile sheepskin binding. Frontis portrait of Twain is present but detached and has a small 1/2 inch tear. The only edition with the censored illustration (with the bulging fly) on page 283 (the original conjugate page, not the cancel that appears in all other first editions It also has a small 1/2 inch tear). All first edition points are present in this copy. First edition, first issue of Twain's masterpiece, one of approximately 500 copies bound in publisher's three-quarters morocco binding. Octavo, original three-quarters brown morocco and marbled boards, gilt-decorated spine, marbled endpapers. Lithographic frontispiece and with 174 illustrations by E.W. Kemble, photographic portrait frontispiece of the bust of Mark Twain by Karl Gerhardt. Copies of Huckleberry Finn in the original publisher's leather bindings are quite rare: "The relative rarity of the cloth and leather bindings is clear. Less than two weeks before publication, [the publisher] Webster announced that he was binding 20,000 copies in cloth, another 2,500 in sheep, and 500 copies in three-quarter leather. The remaining 7000 copies of the first printing were probably bound up in similar proportions leather copies dried out, cracked apart, and have survived in even fewer numbers than the original production numbers would promise" (MacDonnell, 35). In very good condition, rebacked with light rubbing to extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very nice example. It s the best book we ve had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing since.".

First edition, first issue of Mark Twainâ s masterpiece. Octavo, bound in full dark green morocco with morocco spine label lettered in gilt, raised bands to the spine, mar top edge gilt, with 174 illustrations by Edward W. Kemble. With all of the agreed upon first issue points for the clothbound book: page 9 with â Decidedâ remaining uncorrected (to â Decidesâ ); page 13, illustration captioned â Him and another Manâ listed as on page 88; page 57, 11th line from bottom reads â with the was,â instead of â with the sawâ . Other points of bibliographical interest included in this copy are the frontispiece portrait with the tablecloth under the bust, bearing the Heliotype Printing Co. imprint; copyright page dated 1885; Âpage 143 with â lâ missing from â Col.â at top of illustration and with broken â bâ in â bodyâ on line seven; page 155 with the final â 5â missing; page 161, no signature mark â 11â . From the library of William Safire with his bookplate to the pastedown. William Safire was an important American author, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, journalist, and presidential speechwriter. He joined Nixonâ s campaign in the 1960 Presidential race, and again in 1968. Following Nixonâ s 1968 victory, Safire served as a presidential speechwriter for both Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew. He was a frequent guest on Meet The Press, describing himself as the voice of â libertarian conservativesâ and authored several political columns, most notably his weekly column â On Languageâ which appeared in The New York Times Magazine from 1979 until the month of his death in 2009. He authored two books on grammar and linguistics: The New Language of Politics (1968) and what Zimmer called Safireâ s â magnum opus,â Safireâ s Political Dictionary. Safire later served as a member of the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1995 to 2004 and in 2006 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. In fine condition with the original cloth bound in at rear which is, itself, exceptionally bright. Written over an eight-year period, Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was controversial from the outset, attacked by critics for its crudeness, coarseness and vulgarity. Upon issue of the American edition in 1885, several libraries, including the Concord and Brooklyn Public Libraries, banned it from their shelves. Twain later remarked to his editor, "Apparently, the Concord library has condemned Huck as 'trash and only suitable for the slums.' This will sell us another twenty-five thousand copies for sure!" The book nevertheless emerged as one of the defining novels of American literature, prompting Hemingway to declare: "All modern literature comes from one book by Mark Twain. It's the best book we've had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing since.".

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, FIRST PRINTING with the very early issue points: "was" for "saw" on p.57; the Illustrations list p.[13] showing the "Him and another Man" plate as appearing on p.88; p. 9 with 'Decided' in the heading to Chapter VI, later corrected to 'Decides'; p. 155 with the final "5" dropped, the final leaf blank, no signature mark to p. 161. With 174 black and white illustrations by E.W. Kemble. Square 8vo, publisher s original green cloth elaborately decorated in gilt and black on the covers and spine, now housed in a custom slipcase with wraparound chemise. 366 pp. A handsome, well preserved and pleasing copy of this enduring classic. The cloth still nice and dark green with the gilt and black still strong on the upper cover, the giltwork on the spine well preserved, only very minor evidence of age or use to the tips and edges, the text-block very clean and the binding tight and firm. A fine survival of a cornerstone work, with some very skillful and near invisible sophistication, in collector's condition. THE FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND GREATEST BOOKS IN AMERICAN LITERATURE. "ALL MODERN AMERICAN LITERATURE COMES FROM ONE BOOK BY MARK TWAIN CALLED HUCKLEBERRY FINN"--Ernest Hemingway.

Has most points except tablecloth is visible under bust/portrait, page 155 has two fives in different fonts. Book has moderate edge and corner wear, spine is browned a bit with some rubbing to title, some tape stains inside hinges/end papers, rounding to upper right corners that has been sealed to prevent more loss. Some loss to corners have been repaired with substitute blue cloth (which is a lighter blue than the dark original cloth). Areas replaced are a dime size chip to lower right of front corner and about a quarter inch loss from top and bottom of spine. Repair job is excellent but unfortunately the colors do not match well. Zustand: Very Good +. First American edition. A Very Good+ copy of the book. Spine gilt a bit dulled and some wear at the spine ends and corners. Cloth a bit rubbed. Generally clean internally. With all three generally accepted first printing points. Frontis bust of Twain in the first state. An attractive copy overall. Very Good +.

As Ernest Hemingway proclaimed: "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since." Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(or, in more recent editions,The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn) is a novel byMark Twain, first published in the United Kingdom in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885. Commonly named among theGreat American Novels, the work is among the first in majorAmerican literatureto be written throughout invernacularEnglish, characterized bylocal color regionalism. It is told in thefirst personbyHuckleberry "Huck" Finn, the narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer AbroadandTom Sawyer, Detective) and a friend ofTom Sawyer. It is a direct sequel toThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along theMississippi River. Set in aSouthernantebellumsociety that had ceased to exist about 20 years before the work was published,Adventures of Huckleberry Finnis an often scathingsatireon entrenched attitudes, particularly racism. Perennially popular with readers,Adventures of Huckleberry Finnhas also been the continued object of study by literary critics since its publication. The book was widely criticized upon release because of its extensive use of coarse language. Throughout the 20th century, and despite arguments that the protagonist and the tenor of the book are anti-racist,[2][3]criticism of the book continued due to both its perceived use of racial stereotypes and its frequent use of the racial slur "nigger".
