First Edition. "DAHL, Roald. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. New York: Knopf, (1964). Octavo, original red cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. $18,000.First edition, first issue, boldly inscribed in red crayon by Dahl and his wife, actress Patricia Neal, the inscription likely in Neal s hand, the signature in Dahl s: "Dear Anette and Gerald, This book is for children over six. You qualify just. With love from Pat and Roald. Christmas 1964." With numerous in-text illustrations by Joseph Schindelman."Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is already a great classic work one of the most enduring post-war children's books and I think we will not see its like again Dahl is undeniably special" (Connolly, 102). It is in this famous work that the world was introduced to Willie Wonka. Inscribed copies of Dahl's books are uncommon, particularly with such a lengthy and highly personal inscription. First issue, in full red cloth and with six lines of publishing information on last page (instead of five). Book fine. Dust jacket near-fine, with slightest rubbing, front fold splitting but stable, only two tiny closed tears to spine head. A wonderful inscribed copy. Scarce and most desirable.". Signed.

First Edition, First Printing, First State First State book and jacket in the exceedingly scarce blue cloth variant. First edition, first printing boards with an embossed title image to front. Requisite 6 line colophon located on the last page in the ?About The Author? Section. The Chocolate Factory was first published in September of 1964 and there were subsequent printings in October and December of the same year. The accepted point of identification of a first print Charlie is the inclusion of the paper manufacturer in the colophon. Not commonly known is that there are two versions that contain this statement; a version with red boards that most people know and another very rare version that has blue boards, often considered the holy grail for the collector of Roald Dahl of which we have only seen about a half dozen copies show to the market in the last 20 years. Exceedingly scarce blue cloth variant first edition, first printing boards with an embossed title image to front. Strong vibrant gilt titles to spine. The boards are in clean condition with have slight mottling/discoloration to the front. Otherwise the book has no edgewear, and the binding is tight and square. The mustard colored end papers are in clean condition with slight left over residue from what was likely once a bookplate, otherwise No owner names, No inscriptions, and No bookplates. The internal pages are very crisp, bright, and clean for this title with no writing, no marks, no scribbles, no stains, no bent pages, no age toning and no foxing. Beautiful copy of a children?s book in hard to find condition, internally appearing as unread! Please see images. The original First edition, First State dust jacket benefited from very slight professional restoration to the spine ends, and as such presents in near fine condition. A pair of first edition, first printings, published by Alfred Knopf in 1964 and 1972. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: A near fine copy (the third issue with four lines on the colophon page) with one name [Highton] to reverse of the half title. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper 'To Andrew and Rebecca [Highton]/Love/Roald Dahl/1977'. Additionally, Dahl has written 'American Edition' on the front pastedown. In a very good unclipped wrapper with chipping to the corners and spine tips. A little staining to the top of the rear panel. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator: A near fine copy with one name [Highton] to reverse of the half title. SIGNED and INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper 'To Andrew and Rebecca [Highton]/Love/Roald Dahl/1977'. Additionally, Dahl has written 'American Edition' on the front pastedown. In a near fine unclipped wrapper with chipping to the corners and spine tips. A little staining to the top of the rear panel. A superb pair of books with a strong association to Dahl himself. Douglas Highton attended St Peter's prep school in Weston-super-Mare with Roald Dahl. As a friend, Douglas supported Roald during an incident at school, which Roald would never forget and later recounted in his autobiographical book 'Boy'. Douglas also appears anecdotally in the short story 'Lucky Break', and as a character in the short story 'The Swan'. The two stayed in touch over the years and Douglas would visit Roald at home in Great Missenden where Roald kindly signed many books for Douglas' grandchildren, Andrew and Rebecca.

Erstausgabe
Zustand: Near fine in near fine jacket. First issue. First edition, in the first issue dust jacket, of the great chocolatier fantasy of desire fulfilled, a beautiful copy. Dahl's Dickensian tale of a good-hearted waif rescued from poverty by literature's most stylish factory owner, drawing powerfully on the author's remembered childhood miseries and later post-war deprivation. Charlie's wish for a Golden Ticket, more than the uncomplicated greed animating the book's less virtuous children, is an unfathomable longing for sweetness, for a taste of wonder in a grey and oppressive world. Meanwhile, Wonka's chaotic energy drives the story to its greatest heights. As the walled chocolate garden's grotesqueries reward a child-reader's basest narrative instincts, each unworthy child is punished according to his or her character and just desserts, in sequences as merciless as a medieval morality play. For these disquieting episodes, and for the sheer material lavishness of Charlie's ultimate reward, the novel was derided by Eleanor Cameron as "one of the most tasteless books ever written for children, " no better than a television show; Ursula Le Guin concurred, likening its effects to "a tiny psychological fugue, very like that provided by comic books." Children continue, lawlessly, to adore it. 9'' x 5.75''. Original blind-stamped red cloth boards with gilt-titled to spine. In original unclipped ($3.95) pictorial dust jacket. No ISBN number. Purple topstain. Gold endpapers. Black and white illustrations by Joseph Schindelman throughout. 6 line colophon. [12], 162 pages. Jacket with faint soil and toning to spine, touch of marginal toning. Book with some faint dustiness. Tight.
