[COLERIDGE, Samuel Taylor, translator]. Faustus. From The German of Goethe London: Boosey and Sons, 1821. First English edition, [translated by Coleridge ?]. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 5/8 inches, 225 x 140 mm). [viii], 86, [1, list of plates], [1, errata] pp. With half-title and frontispiece portrait of Goethe. Uncut in original drab olive green boards. Professionally rebacked using original spine. Original paper spine label, printed in black. Boards rubbed. Corners bumped and extremities of the spine chipped and bumped. Outer hinges cracked but firm. Some light foxing to endpapers, but very clean throughout. Overall a very good copy. [Together with] RETSCH, Moritz. [MOSES, Henry, illustrator]. Retsch's Series of Twenty-Six Outlines illustrative of Goethe's Tragedy of Faust, Engraved from the Originals by Henry Moses. And an Analysis of the Tragedy. London: Printed for Boosey and Sons, 1820 First edition. Quarto (10 7/8 x 8 7/8 inches; 278 x 227 mm). [2], [1, list of plates], [1, blank], 60 [errata on pg 60 with final text], pp. Illustrated with twenty-six engraved plates including frontispiece by Henry Moses. Uncut in quarter paper over original drab brown boards. Paper label on front board, label lettered in black. Professionally rebacked to style. Corners and edges of boards slightly bumped and chipped. Boards a bit rubbed. Some light foxing throughout, but mostly very clean. A very good, rare copy. Both volumes house together in a red morocco clamshell. The 1820 Retsch edition is an outline of Goethe's Faustus which includes twenty-six engraved plates by Henry Moses. These plates were first published the year before the 1821 first English edition of the book and issued separately. The list of plates at the end of the 1821 text correlates with the plates issued in 1820, and the two, because they were issued separately, are rarely found together. Although not stated in the book, it recently has become widely accepted that Coleridge was the translator of this first English edition. A book published in 2007 entitled "Faustus: From the German of Goethe Translated by Samuel Taylor Coleridge" and edited by Coleridge scholars Frederick Burwick and James C. McKusick establishes Coleridge as the translator of Goethe's Faust. The recent discovery of Coleridge's translation of Faustus is considered "A major literary discovery will heat the blood of 19th century Romantic scholars around the world and profoundly change the course of Romantic literature." Beschreibung: Tübingen, 1808. Small 8vo. Contemporary full black morocco with gilt spine. A bit of wear to extremities. A bit of brown spotting and remains of wax seal to back end-paper and verso of last tex-leaf. Old owner's name to front free end-paper. The rare first edition of the first full version of Faust I, in the even rarer separate printing (i.e. not the one from the collected works), of one of the peaks of world literature, the main work by one of the greatest writers that ever lived. The first part of Faust I to appear was that in volume 7 of collected works from 1790, in which the much shorter fragment of it, entitled "Faust. Ein Fragment" appeared. In 1808, the full version of Faust I appeared for the very fist time, in the collected works and separately, as it is here. Faust II, which is very rarely read and not usually included in what we mean by Goethe's Faust, was written much later and only appeared after Goethe's death. Few other writers have been as influential as Goethe and his works were an immense source of inspiration for everything from drama and music to science and philosophy. Goethe is generally accepted as one of the most important Western thinkers and his main work "Faust" arguably constitutes the most important and influential work of world literature. "If Goethe may justly be called the last representative of the renaissance ideal of the "oumo universale", his "Faust" embodies the sum total of his poetical growth." (Printing and the Mind of Man: 298). "Faust" is probably the work for which Goethe is most famous, and this is not without reason. The novel emphasizes the strength of the individual and the right to freely investigate aspects of human and divine character. The novel also fights for man's right to determine his own destiny, and it is thus considered the first great literary work in the spirit of modern individualism. The work is also considered highly relevant to science and scientific thought, since Goethe here offers a holistic and non-analytic approach to these areas.PMM 298 (being the 1834 ed., not the real first); Hagen: 310 [D1]. Beschreibung: Munchen & Berlin, Bruckman, Verlag, s.d. (1874-1876). In fol. (cm. 51x39). I 3 tagli in oro. Beschreibung: Ch. Henchoz, Paris, 1938. Sublime edition of Goethe's Faust illustrated by Art Deco master Francois-Louis Schmied. Considered one of the greatest book illustrators of the 20th century, Ward Ritchie calls this Faust "the most ambitious project that Schmied had undertaken to publish". Schmied began work on the book in 1929 but due to the financial repercussions arising from the Great Depression was forced to abandon the project for a number of years. Fortunately, the publisher Charles Henchoz agreed to sponsor and publish the book in 1936 and work was resumed. Schmied painted sixty-six illustrations for the book which were then engraved on wood by his son Theo. Ritchie states that "Schmied, from his outpost in Morocco carefully supervised the printing of the illustrations. It is an amazing example of the devotion to perfection that Schmied had." Printed in a limited edition of 106 copies, this copy is number 79, signed by the author in pencil. I could locate only three copies of this work in the United States. 4to (35 x 24cm), 66 compositions in color, including 20 full-page plates. Loose as issued in original wrappers, uncut, original cloth folder and slip-case. Offsetting as is common with Schmied due to his special formula for ink. A few very slight foxing marks. Fine condition. [Carteret Illustrés IV, 188.]. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 001912

Beschreibung: Julius Schroder Verlag, Munchen / Munich, 1921. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good +. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good-. Sepp Frank (illustrator). First edition. #19 of 25 copies printed on fine Holland paper and a beautiful production overall., contents completely free of foxing. This is the deluxe edition of a book that is extravagant in the regular edition of 190 copies. In this edition artist Sepp Frank has signed the limitation page (as in the regular edition) and (only in this edition) each of the 25 full-page intaglio prints (signed on the print, not in the plate). In addition, the actual copper intaglio plate for one of the images is built into the slipcase itself. There are 25 images in the book and this edition is limited to 25 copies because each slipcase has an original Sepp copper intaglio plate embedded in the slipcase. There is an additional small intaglio image that is not signed in either edition. The images (black and gray aquatint etchings) are very Munich-1920 in their intensity This is a massive folio edition: 16.75" tall x 13" wide. 220 pp. + limitation leaf. Bound in full vellum with spine and boards ruled and lettered in gilt, two loose silk bookmarks, in vellum-bound slipcase. The slipcase for this limited edition is unusual: set into the front of box is the actual copper intaglio plate for the second image in the book. Vellum binding by Knorr & Hirth with age toning and one darkened spot, slipcase with moderate soiling and wear, one inch seam split. Book contents excellent overall, pp. 44/45 shadow from a contemporary Julius Shroder publishing prospectus that was laid-in (still present). Those pages are text only, no plates toned. This is a very heavy-paper book, set in gothic type. The sewn binding is starting to give a little from the natural swelling and contraction of the vellum boards. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 3537

Beschreibung: Mimeograph typescript, N.p., 1934. 27 cm; [2], 169, [1], pages, dedication leaf, and original pencil and chalk title leaf with portrait of a grinning Mephistopheles, by Michel Fingesten (Michl Finkelstein), signed in pencil, protected by glassine leaf. Dedication "für HANS ARNOLD geschreiben, Weihnachten 1934," signed in ink by Grete Scholz. Text mimeographed typescript on Crown Van Gelder. Bound in half vellum over buckram cloth-covered boards, with buckram endleaves. Title stamped in gilt letters on vellum panel of top board. Upper board somewhat bowed, but book is effectively pristine. The successful German-Jewish banker Hans Arnold made his home in Berlin a salon for artists, musicians, and intellectuals (the structure now houses the American Academy in Berlin). As a patron of the arts, Arnhold merited this hand-made gift, dedicated for Christmas 1934, of a Goethe's Faust, one of an unspecified (but certainly tiny) number of mimeographed copies printed on Crown Van Gelder watermarked paper and accompanied by an original drawing by the notable illustrator Michel Fingesten. The gift dedication is signed by Grete Scholz (d. 1937), wife of the painter Fritz-Karl Scholz-Wetterhof (d. 1945?). (Fingesten's ex-libris for Grete Scholz is extant.) Michel Fingesten (1884-1943), was a peripatetic artist known primarily for illustrated bookplates, who produced a rich body of work in the course of his agitated life. An Italian Jew, he was held in the concentration camp at Ferramonti for three years until its liberation in 1943. He died soon after a result of wounds sustained in a car accident. This volume is an artifact of the vibrant artistic and intellectual life that flourished in Germany and Mitteleurop at the cusp of Fascist domination in the 1930s. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 5744

Schwab who mentions that the signature only is in Goethe's hand. Bound in full, dark green crushed morocco leather with four raised bands on the spine, with gilt title and decorations, the covers show elaborate gilt borders with red leather inlaid roses in the corners, inner doublures of red morroco with gilt dentelles on wide dark green leather turn-ins, leather inner hinges, top-edge gilt, red silk bookmarker ribbon bound in. A very high quality binding, but without a binder's name present. The spine shows some age-related fading to tan of the green leather. The mounted Goethe item bears a tiny paper label at the top: GOETHE, and is four lines of German script (possibly a quote from Faust?), and is dated Weimar 29 December, 1823, with the signature: J W Goethe under the calligraphic sentiment; at the bottom is added in ink: Nota, Nur die Unterschrift ist von Goethes Hand. G. Schwab. Under this are light penciled notes: G. Schwab, died 1850 Lyric Poet [probably Gustav Schwab; 1792-1850]. This mounted sheet shows some age-realted tanning. This specially bound, low-numbered copy, might have been extra-illustrated by the publisher, or specially produced for a bookseller. Weight: 4 lbs. Postage is extra on this item. Signed by Author(s). Nerval's translation of Goethe's epic play was first published in 1828, Goethe commenting that "this French translation all seems again fresh, new, and spirited" (Oxenford, 3 January 1860). The dramatic illustrations accompanying this edition of the translation are by Pierre Gaston Jourdain, an illustrator who taught at the Lycée de Versailles, and the brother of the architect and art critic Frantz Jourdain. Fritz provided the preface to this edition, in which he discusses the his brother's skill, and love of Goethe, describing him as "a madly enthusiastic artist of Goethe genius" (p. 11). Beschreibung: Julius Schroder Verlag, Munichen, 1921. Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 1921, Julius Schroder Verlag, Munchen. Dieses werk mit 25 Radierungen von Sepp Frank wurde im Jahre 1920 im Auftage von Dr. iur. Julius Schroderim Munchen, 31 of 190 exemplaren, (I don't speak any German) signed on the limitation page by Sepp Frank. This copy has no slipcase or separate, loose etching or tissue plate guards if it ever had any of those things. The book is in fair condition only--the vellum binding has many bumps and scuff marks and there are significant damp stains extending an inch & a half to the bottom edges throughout, both text & etchings. I suspect this book was picked up somewhere in the ruins of a European battlefield during world war ll. Nonetheless, it is still a tight, solid copy. Signed by Illustrator(s).
