Tijtgat, Edgard (illustrator). Octavo. (iii), 16, (1+16)ff., frenchfold. From an edition of fifty copies, this is one of ten printed on chine and signed by the artist. This is the story of Little Red Riding Hood, with woodcut text and illustrations by Belgian artist Edgard Tijtgat. Sixteen illustrations, hors texte, appear in two states: color and bistre. Tijtgat's illustrations are bold and expressionistic in style, and also deceptively innocent: things do not end well for Red Riding Hood in Charles Perrault's moral and more sinister version of the tale. Floral motif on the endpapers and repeated throughout the book. Tijtgat is associated with the Brabant Fauvists, a Belgian movement focused on pure, bold colors and simplified lines, similar to the Fauves led by Henri Matisse in France. During World War I, Tijtgat set up his printshop in England, where this book was published. Light foxing to upper margins of a few pages, some faint offsetting from prints, short closed tear to spine foot. Overall a fine copy in color-printed pictorial boards. (Ridley: Beaumont 10).

As a teenager studying at the Crystal Palace School of Art, she met Lucien Pissarro (1863?1944), son of the French Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. Married in 1892, she and Lucien Pissarro shared a deep admiration for William Morris and the artistic ideals embodied by his Kelmscott Press books. Following the birth of their daughter Orovida in 1893, the couple established the Eragny Press, which specialized in high-quality literary editions illustrated with wood-engravings.

The collector I purchased this from had two copies of this book and the collation was exactly the same, therefore this volume is complete.Rare Edition.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. No Jacket. First French edition by Adrien Maeght, published before the English and German editions. Approx. 4 ¼ in. x 6 ¼ in. Not paginated. A series of abstract designs or illustrations depicting, without any text, the story of Little Red Riding Hood's journey through the forest to see her grandmother. The only text is that which matches the characters with their symbolic designs, and it is in French. Our heroine is represented by a red dot; the forest by a group of green dots; grandmother's house by a blue dot; and the wolf by a purple dot; et al. The story ends happily, with Riding Hood, her mom, her grandmother, and the hunter all safe and sound. The pages are bound accordion-style in cloth covered boards with title label pasted on the front panel. In a matching slipcase. The book and the case are both fine.
