Unbound. Zustand: Near Fine. Measuring 56" x 42". Some light wear at edges and a few light scattered creases, near fine. A production page proof for Maurice Sendak's classic children's book, *Where the Wild Things Are*. The proof is printed on both sides and retains its original bright and vibrant colors. It comes from the personal archives of a distinguished children's book author and editor who worked closely with both Sendak and the book's editor, Ursula Nordstrom. While there is no jacket present to verify the issue points, as typical for a first edition of the book, the title page is conspicuously missing its Library of Congress identification number suggesting it was printed prior to securing one as required for publication. Further, we have only been able to locate one other known copy of page proof for *Where the Wild Things Are* in the Maurice Sendak Collection at the Rosenbach Museum, and it too lacks the LOC number on the title page. An amazing artifact from what is one of the most popular and influential children's book of the 20th Century.

First Edition. First Printing. Oblong quarto (25.5cm x 23.75cm); pictorial paper-covered boards and grey cloth backstrip; pictorial endpapers; dustjacket; [40]pp; illus. Inscribed by Sendak on the upper half-title page, surrounding a small drawing of Max: "Jan.9, 63 / For Richard + Sandy / with much affection! Maurice Sendak." Gentle sunning to upper and lower board edges, light wear to spine ends and lower board edges, with minute exposure to one lower corners, and a shallow (1/2 cm) indentation to cloth at lower front joint; contents fresh, with the binding sound; Near Fine. In the correct dustjacket, without the Caldecott Medal sticker on the front panel, priced $3.50 at upper front flap, with lower corner clipped by the publisher, next to a 40-80 / 1163 code; modest wear, sunning, and dust-soil to spine and panels, shallow loss to spine ends, with two closed tears to lower panels closest to the spine, another to upper front joint, and a few small, faint splash marks to lower half of spine (most evident on verso); an unrestored, Very Good example. An excellent copy of what is perhaps the best-loved and most distinguished illustrated children's book of the 20th century, one that the American Institute of Graphic Arts called "the perfect book." Inscribed by Sendak to Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and translator Richard Howard (1929-2022) and his then partner, author and playwright Sanford Friedman (1928-2010). Howard and Sendak both spent time on Fire Island during the 1960s, where Sendak wrote Where the Wild Things Are, and the men were part of a tightly-knit circle of queer authors and artists in New York during that period. By the mid-1970s, Howard and Sendak had drifted apart, though this copy is evidence of a once closer friendship. While erroneously dated (the book was published in November, 1963 this copy was actually inscribed on January 9, 1964, not 1963), it still remains among the earliest recorded inscriptions in copies of Where the Wild Things Are. The earliest we have traced were all inscribed (likely as holiday gifts) in December, 1963, to illustrator Hilary Knight, Sendak's friend and psychoanalyst Bert Slaff, and to Louise Halsey. Hanrahan A58; Grolier 97 (One Hundred Books Famous in Children's Literature).

First edition, first printing, first issue. Criticized at the time of publication for its dark elements, Where the Wild Things Are was soon acclaimed as a triumph of children's storytelling and book design; it has remained a classic of 20th-century children's literature, and was adapted into a film in 2009. There were multiple issues of the first edition, but this copy is the earliest, distinguished by the Library of Congress number 63-21253 to the title page, the codes 40-80 and 1163 to the front flap, and the absence on the rear flap of the mention of the Caldecott Award bestowed upon the book on publication - the winning of such a prestigious prize compelled the publishers to recall the entire edition and change the text on the dust jacket to include the achievement. Hanrahan A58; Grolier Children's 100, 97. Oblong quarto. Original cloth-backed pictorial paper boards, front cover lettered in black. With dust jacket. Housed in a custom blue morocco-backed folding box by the Chelsea Bindery. Colour illustrations throughout by Maurice Sendak. Notably fresh, boards very slightly toned with rear corners slightly rubbed; spine of jacket slightly soiled, short closed tear to rear panel, some slight toning; a near-fine copy in a very good jacket.

Erstausgabe
Lovely first edition of the subversive Caldecott-award winner, in the rare original first-issue dust jacket. After illustrating nearly 50 other books, WILD THINGS was Sendak's first full-color picture book with his own text and illustrations. He took full advantage of that control to push the boundaries of the children's picture book genre. The story of a boy who gets in a fight with his mother and lets out his pent up feelings in a fantastical Wild Rumpus, WILD THINGS focused on the complex inner experience of little Max, acknowledging the reality that children deal with anger, frustration, and fear just as adults do. For this reason, the book was initially not well received: before the rise of New Realism in children's literature, many critics felt children's books ought to model ideal behavior rather than accurately reflect children's emotional experiences. The book made a splash from the very beginning, as Sendak expected it would: many critics advised against buying the book, and some libraries banned it. Readers largely didn't know how to react to its unconventional approach - until it won the Caldecott. WILD THINGS is now one of the best-selling children's books of all time, paving the way for commercial picture books that explore our darker sides and encourage us to make friends with monsters. 9'' x 10''. Original quarter grey cloth, color pictorial paper boards. In original price-clipped color pictorial dust jacket without Caldecott medal, and with 3-paragraph blurb on front flap (blurbs are issue point, not price; ref. Hanrahan). Color pictorial endpapers. Illustrated by Sendak in color throughout. [40] pages. Jacket with some soiling and toning, a few short closed tears minutely reinforced on verso. Book with a bit of bumping to extremities, else clean and bright. Near fine in very good plus jacket.

Zustand: Fine. Beautiful association copy of the limited 25th Anniversary edition, presented by Sendak to his dear friend James Marshall, with the special card containing an original signed pen-and-ink drawing of Max parading as a Wild Thing and an additional inscription to Marshall. Sendak sent this copy as a birthday gift to Marshall, best known for his George and Martha series, one year before Marshall's untimely death from AIDS-related complications at the age of 50. In 1997, Sendak wrote passionately about Marshall's place in picture book history for the NEW YORK TIMES, including their own deep connection: "If I remember with terrible pain my lost friend and colleague, it is only because James raised the art of friendship to an exhilarating height. I think myself the luckiest of men to have shared his sweet warmth and confidence. There is a small army of people who, I'm certain, feel the same way. He made me laugh until I cried. No one else could ever do that. He was a wicked angel and will be missed forever." When Sendak died, he bequeathed his own collection of Marshall's works to the University of Connecticut, which already housed Marshall's papers. This 25th Anniversary edition contains color reproductions executed to Sendak's exacting specifications, with lush results. The limited edition is scarce, and rarely retains the card with the dated (Oct. 88) Wild Thing drawing. Given the 1988 drawing and Sendak's 1991 inscription, it's likely this was one of his retained author copies. But most of all, it is the association of this copy - speaking to the mutual respect of giants in the field, and testifying to the depth of loss experienced by the gay community during the AIDS crisis - that makes it such a powerful object. 9'' x 10'' (book). Publisher's full blue leather stamped in gold. All edges gilt. In original lined cloth box with large color plate on front board. One of only 220 copies. Illustrated by Sendak in color throughout. 48 pages. Envelope laid in with 6.5'' x 5.5'' card inscribed by Sendak: "For Jim - a special picture for his birthday - Love - Maurice - Oct. 10, '91" under a pen-and-ink drawing of Max dressed as a Wild Thing, additionally signed "Maurice Sendak / Oct. 88.".

Signed limited edition of the 25th anniversary of this classic work, one of 220 examples specially bound and signed by Maurice Sendak with an original Wild Thing drawing by Sendak. Very good in a very good slipcase. Uncommon. Hailed as "the Picasso of children's books," Maurice Sendak produced more than 85 books, of which Where the Wild Things Are is undeniably the most famous, being one of the ten best-selling children's books of all time. "Wild Things!' When Max's sojourn among them unfolded in kinematic splendor in 1963, adults trembled and children reveled. Reaching back into his own Brooklyn childhood, Sendak created the enduring child-hero Max, who overcomes his fears and achieves catharsis in a colorful fantasy tableau. The book was awarded the 1964 Caldecott Medal by the American Library Association" (NYPL Books of the Century 212). Basis for the 2009 film directed by Spike Jonze starring Max Records and features the voices of James Gandolfini, Paul Dano, Lauren Ambrose, Forest Whitaker, Catherine O'Hara, and Chris Cooper.

Because the DJ is not a first issue, I have priced it accordingly. Still the best children's book every written and illustrations are stunning.
