[viii], 196 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First edition. First edition. [viii], 196 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. A fine copy of the notorious dystopian novel. Richly inventive in language, written in an argot that borrows heavily from the Russian, and with an unforgettable antihero at its center, Burgess's book was overshadowed by the futuristic 1971 film adaptation by Stanley Kubrick, which followed after the American edition of the novel, leaving off the final redeeming chapter of the first edition. Black boards. Fine in fine dust jacket.

First edition, first impression, first issue, bound in black boards and with the wide-flapped dust jacket priced 16s. Though its violent content has shocked many, the novel remains among the most significant and enduring works of post-war British literature. It was the basis for the equally controversial 1971 Stanley Kubrick film, which led author and director to fear they had "opened a Pandora's box" (ODNB). In the second issue, the jacket flaps were trimmed and re-priced 18s. The third issue was released in purple boards with a decimal price sticker. Boytinck 75. Octavo. Original black boards, spine lettered in gilt, publisher's device on rear cover in blind. With dust jacket, designed by Barry Trengrove. Ownership inscription in red ink on front free endpaper. Minor spots on top edge and front endpapers, else fresh; jacket bright, notwithstanding the usual spine sunning, a little rubbing and couple of short closed tears, one discreetly repaired, ghosting from previous overprice sticker on front flap, unclipped: a near-fine copy in like jacket.

Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First edition. A Near Fine copy in the publisher's original black cloth, a few white scuff marks on the rear board. In a Near Fine first issue dust jacket with deeper flaps and the original price of 16s on the lower front flap. Two small punctures to the front panel and one to the front flap. A striking copy of this controversial novel that became an equally controversial film. A story that raises questions about crime, punishment, and human nature. Setting out in a London of the future, Alex seeks thrills and entertainment by committing "a little of the old ultraviolence" on other citizens of the city. Following a particularly violent episode, Alex is jailed and submits to a new form of physical and psychological punishment that will affect his own humanity for the rest of his life. "A Clockwork Orange is Anthony Burgess' most famous novel, and its impact on literary, musical, and visual culture has been extensive. The novel is concerned with the conflict between the individual and the state, the punishment of young criminals, and the possibility of redemption" (Burgess Foundation). Featured in a number of top 100 novels lists, including Time Magazine, Burgess depicts a dystopian future England, where main protagonist Alex narrates his acts of extreme violence. The book was controversial at the time, with the final chapter not appearing in the initial US release. The book is celebrated for its use of language, with Burgess creating a form of slang called Nadsat, a mix of Russian and cockney rhyming slang. Malcolm Bradbury wrote "All of Mr Burgess's powers as a comic writer, which are considerable, have gone into the rich language of his inverted Utopia. If you can stomach the horrors, you'll enjoy the manner". The book went on to be adapted for the screens by Stanley Kubrick, With its highly stylised violence, it attracted even more controversy and was even withdrawn from release in the UK at the request of Kubrick after several incidents of violence were blamed on the film.
