Hardcover. Woolf, Virginia. A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN. Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1932, 8vo., 172pp. Publisher's original blue boards, titles to spine gilt. A near fine fresh copy [neat contemporary name on the ffe.] in the blue printed dustwrapper of the First Canadian Edition, first printing. The most elusive of the First Editions having been printed in the US [possibly from Harcourt Brace supplied sheets] in an unknown but very small edition, [250 - 500 copies, a speculation]. A very nice example for the completist, the DJ has one repaired closed tear but is otherwise very bright & interesting in its yellowish tonal quality. Woolf's major polemic against patriarchy, based loosely on two lectures she delivered, one at Newnham and the other at Girton. Kirkpatrick and Clarke A12dd. Woolf observed in her diary, "I shall be attacked for a feminist". An increasingly uncommon & important Woolf title & 20th century literary highlight. Excellent copy. Noted in Kirkpatrick's latest edition. As far as we know, fewer than three or four copies in dustwrappers have surfaced in the last 30 years. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 32518

Beschreibung: Hogarth Press, 1929. First trade edition. Original cinnamon cloth with gilt titles on the spine, in pictorial Vanessa Bell dustwrapper. A fine copy, with a small ownership name on the front endpaper, in a near fine dustwrapper, which has just one tiny nick from a corner at the base of the spine, but is otherwise beautifully crisp and clean. An extended essay, based on Woolf's lectures at a women's college at Cambridge University in 1928. In it, Woolf addresses her thoughts on "the question of women and fiction," interpreted by Woolf as many questions. In A Room of One's Own, Woolf ponders the significant question of whether or not a woman could produce art of the high quality of Shakespeare. In doing so, she examines women's historical experience as well as the distinctive struggle of the woman artist. "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is going to write.". Beschreibung: London: Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, 1929, 1929. Small crown octavo. Original orange cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket designed by Vanessa Bell. Housed in a custom brown cloth slipcase. Spot of abrasion to front pastedown, a little offsetting to endpapers, else a fine copy in the jacket with restoration to spine ends and repairs to folds and top and bottom edges. First trade edition, first impression, of Woolf's feminist literary manifesto, in which she assesses the history of women as writers and the challenges they have faced. She notes the effects of patriarchal literary culture on female characters, and makes the case that women must carve out both physical and psychological space for themselves in order to become part of the literary establishment. The work is based on two papers read to the Arts Society at Newnham and the Odtaa at Girton in October 1928. The signed limited edition was issued simultaneously in the USA and in the UK three days earlier. Kirkpatrick A12.b. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 136551

Beschreibung: The Hogarth Press, London, 1929. Full Cloth. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. FIRST EDITION with Dust Jacket. Original cinnamon cloth, gilt on the spine quite bright & unrubbed, in the rare original dust jacket. This has had archival restoration at the top & bottom of the spine and at the corners. Hardly perceptible. Previous owner's signature on front free end page and light discoloring to same else EXCELLENT condition in VERY GOOD dust jacket. Woolf's seminal essay on women and writing has become a classic feminist text: Woolf's "aim was to establish a woman's tradition, recognizable by its circumstances, subject-matter, and its distinct problems. A Room of One's Own charted this vast territory with an air of innocent discovery which itself sharpens the case against induced ineffectiveness and ignorance that for so long clouded the counter-history of women" "A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction," said Woolf, "and that, as you will see, leaves the great problem of the true nature of woman and the true nature of fiction unsolved." One of the most influential and progressive texts of 20th century literary feminism "A Room of One's Own" is based on Virginia Woolf's Cambridge lectures called 'Women and Fiction' given at two women's colleges, the Arts Society at Newnham and the Odtaa at Girton in October 1928. Virginia Woolf makes her way through the shelves of the British Library, and thus playfully, through the history, education and writing of women in England, their marginalisation and struggle to be creative and defy convention. She analyses as well as exposes Britain as a patriarchal society and androcentric culture, and contrary to widely held assumptions, subtle irony, intelligent humor and wit abound. At the time, Virginia Woolf was just able to have her own, new room at Monk's House in Rodmell which was entirely paid for with money she had earned from her writing. It appears that the room at King's College where the famous luncheon party took place still features decorations described in the essay. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Hardcover.
