Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Sidney Paget (illustrator). First edition. 12mo, 358pp., scarlet cloth, extra gilt covers, shelfworn, some bubbling to the cloth, foxed, embossment of the W. H. Smith London shop on front free endpaper, just above the inked name of the original purchaser, and dated "March 1902" -within a week of publication! Note: a tight copy, but lacking 3 of the 16 Paget plates ( at pp. 208, 318, 328). A mystery classic, with the iconic Arthur Garth Jones-designed cover. [G&G A26a. DeWaal no. C369, Shaw's Basic Holmesian Library, ]. Laid in is an Autograph Note initialled by Conan Doyle on his Bignell Wood postcard-sized note card: 3 lines, 21 words, "A very interesting case." Bignell Wood was the weekend retreat home Conan Doyle gave to his wife, Jean, as a birthday present, and they are buried nearby; thus, this undated note is circa 1924-1930. Note: this has one of the two recently-discovered points: a) p. 13 has the first state of "you" for "your" ( in 'I have heard you name mentioned . "), b) has the reversed illustration at p.76, showing Sidney Paget's signature as a mirror image, as it appeared in the Strand magazine issue of October, 1901.

Original Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. Doyle, A. Conan. DRESSED TO KILL [here bearing the initial, later discarded, title "Prelude To Murder"]. Los Angeles: Universal Studios, 1946. Complete 78pp brad-bound shooting script consisting of a mix of original ribbon-copy typescript and studio-mimeographed white pages, dated January 16th, 1946 with production number 7337 stamped on the cover. This remarkable writer's draft contains extensive author-revised annotations, emendations, revisions and additions throughout. This is accomplished via a cut-and-paste, the insertion of additional leaves, and new dialog and description scrawled on the versos, an exceptional artifact which boldly captures the revision process of this last entry in the Sherlock Holmes' Universal Studios film series. The front cover has been neatly reinforced with tape and bears the original penciled filing notation indicating that this particular script is the copy from which the final draft was produced. The title, DRESSED TO KILL, refers to the film's wily femme fatale Hilda Courtney (played by Patricia Morison), an homage to Irene Adler from "A Scandal In Bohemia" complete with a familiar misdirection trick which Hilda uses to fool Watson into revealing a hidden location. The plot is an amalgam of several Holmes stories but also draws from other plots in the Universal Sherlock film canon: a convicted thief in Dartmoor Prison hides stolen Bank of England printing plates inside three music boxes -- leading to the murder or attempted murder of their owners, using the central device of a secret code which, of course, only Holmes can brilliantly break. Starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in their final film together. Signed by Author(s).

Original Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. Original Manuscript. Doyle, A. Conan (Frank Gruber, screenwriter). TERROR BY NIGHT. Burbank: Universal Studios, 1945-6. This unique film studio screenplay archive consists of THREE studio scripts: two original writer's draft manuscripts, and the final dialogue and continuity script. In short, a treasure trove of primary material relating to one of the most endearing and enduring film series of the 1940s. The twelve Sherlock Holmes films produced by Universal Pictures during the years 1942-1946 are legend; they are surely the best known screen-adapted adventures of English Literature's most iconic character and Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are still cherished as the definitive Holmes and Watson. 1. Dated July 2nd, 1945, Frank Gruber's complete 113pp original typed carbon copy manuscript labeled "File Copy" accomplished on onion-skin paper, brad-bound and housed in original drab brown studio covers (production number 7322), with each leaf rubber-stamped "Contract File Copy" in red block letters. The cover is edge-worn but the contents are Very Good indeed. This copy belonged to Tom McKnight (penciled signature so stating) who served as the Universal Studios Sherlock Holmes technical adviser throughout the entire run of the series. 2. Dated September 29th, 1945, Frank Gruber's complete 93pp corrected carbon copy manuscript, cover-titled in pencil, which includes, brad-bound and laid in at the rear, two studio-mimeographed sets of extensive screenwriter-corrected white revision pages dated 10/4/1945 and 10/8/1945. Overall, Very Good. 3. Dated January 14th, 1946, the complete original studio-mimeographed self-wrapper final post-production dialogue continuity script, bound with two brads at the top. In Very Good condition. Although this film was inspired by Conan Doyle's "Adventure of the Empty House" in its characterization of Colonel Sebastian Moran, and the use of an air gun as a murder weapon, screenwriter Frank Gruber created what essentially was an original story and screenplay. Gruber's prior film credits included "Northern Pursuit" (1943) with Errol Flynn and "Johnny Angel" the 1945 Crime Noir starring George Raft. He was also one of the most prolific pulp magazine short story writers of the era. The producer of TERROR BY NIGHT was Howard Benedict (from RKO's Saint and Falcon series). The director and executive producer was Roy William Neill who was inarguably the guiding force behind the last nine films in the series. TERROR BY NIGHT unapologetically borrowed from both of Alfred Hitchcock's train-set thrillers "The 39 Steps" (1936) and "The Lady Vanishes" (1938) and Roy William Neill's interpretation of these classics perhaps was the reason TERROR BY NIGHT is one of the best films in the series. TERROR BY NIGHT opened on February 8th, 1946 to excellent reviews and the favorable reaction by a thrilled public. A unique archive, a unique opportunity for the collector. Signed by Author(s).

First editions of Arthur Conan Doyleâ s classic stories starring literatureâ s most famous detective, with an autographed letter. Octavo, original pictorial black and gilt-stamped light blue and dark blue cloth, illustrated by Sidney Paget, patterned endpapers, all edges gilt. First issues, the first title with the street scene vignette with no text on the street sign and with "Violent" for "Violet" on p 317. With an autograph letter signed by Arthur Conan Doyle dates September 24th on his Windlesham letterhead which reads, "My dear Stilwell I am full of sympathy but it is simply implausible for me to fall into your Brownie scheme. I have a full winter before me. Then, if I get to America in April I should start off from Chicago and carry on in the West, as I have not touched that ground. Jim and Randall would make a strong combination. Rev Vale Owen comes and in January. I wonder if you could supplement him. There is responsibility experience and responsibility involved - and that's the case. I told Lloyd George about you and he was interested in the Plan. All remembrance to Mrs. Stilwell. Yours A Conan Doyle." The recipient, Arthur Edward Stilwell was the founder of the Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Gulf Railroad, predecessor to the Kansas City Southern Railway. He served as KCPGâ s president from 1897 to 1900 and published many books after his retirement in 1912. He wrote novels, poetry and plays. He also wrote political works on world affairs and the monetary system. His writing attracted attention because in them he maintained that he had based many of his life and business decisions on the whispers of what he called brownies â " nocturnal spiritual fairies that provided him with guidance. He notably claimed that his brownies had advised him not to make Galveston the Gulf terminus of his line, because that city was destined to be destroyed by a tidal wave â " which it would be in 1900; he placed the terminus at a different location, which he founded and named for himself, Port Arthur. Arthur Conan Doyle and other authorities on the supernatural considered Stilwell to have the greatest psychic experiences known to man, according to a June 15, 1922, New York Times article about Stilwellâ s gift. In very good condition, reinforced. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. These volumes contain such famous and memorable tales as "A Scandal in Bohemia" and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band." Of special note is the last case in the Memoirs, "The Final Problem," in which Holmes apparently meets his death in a struggle with "the Napoleon of crime," Professor Moriarty. "At one point, tiring of the detective, Doyle attempted to exterminate himâ ¦ but the clamor of his admirers forced him to resurrect Holmes for several further volumes, and his popularity has waned little since" (Benet, 273). With Sidney Paget's original, iconic illustrations: "Paget's spirited illustrationsâ ¦ greatly assisted to popularize those stories" (DNB). "The initial 12 tales were collected between covers as The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, published in England and America in 1892; and 11 of the second 12â ¦ as The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, published in 1894. If any reader be prepared to name two other books that have given more innocent but solid pleasure, let him speak nowâ " or hold his peace!" (Haycraft, 50).
