Berger war von 1897 bis 1914 Leiter des Botanischen Gartens Hanbury am Capo Mortola nahe der Gemeinde Ventimiglia im italienischen Ligurien. Von 1915 bis 1926 war er Leiter der Staatlichen Gärten Württembergs. Die Agaven (Agave) sind eine Pflanzengattung in der Unterfamilie der Agavengewächse (Agavoideae) innerhalb der Familie der Spargelgewächse (Asparagaceae). Agaven werden manchmal auch als Jahrhundertpflanze (von engl. ¿Century Plant¿) bezeichnet, da sie nur einmal blühen und bis zur Ausbildung eines Blütenstands mehrere Jahrzehnte vergehen können.
