Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. This book looks at the invaluable work carried out by members of the Air Transport Auxiliary during the course of the Second World War. Comprised of both men and women, it was a civilian organisation tasked with the collection and delivery of military aircraft from the factories to the RAF and Royal Navy stations. Men who undertook the role had to be exempt from having to undertake war time military service due to health or age, but other than that there were very few restrictions on who who could join, which accounted for one-legged, one-armed, one-eyed and short sighted pilots being accepted. Initially it was only men who were allowed to carry out this service, but by December 1939, British authorities were persuaded by Pauline Gower (the daughter of Sir Robert Vaughan Gower, a wartime Conservative MP, and an accomplished pilot in her own right), to establish a women's section of the Air Transport Auxiliary, of which she was put in charge. The first eight women were accepted in to the service, but it would not be until 1943 that its male and female members received the same pay. By the end of the war 147 different types of aircraft had been flown by the men and women of the Air Transport Auxiliary, including Spitfire fighter aircraft and Lancaster bombers. These brave pilots were not just British, but came from 28 Commonwealth and neutral countries and their efforts sometimes came at a price: 174 Air Transport Auxiliary pilots, both men and women, died during the war whilst flying for the service. AUTHOR: Stephen is a retired police officer having served with Essex Police as a constable for thirty years between 1983 and 2013\. He is married to Tanya and has two sons, Luke and Ross, and a daughter, Aimee. When not writing, Stephen can be found walking his four dogs with his wife Tanya at some unearthly time of the morning, when most normal people are still fast asleep. 32 b/w illustrations This book looks at the invaluable work carried out by members of the Air Transport Auxiliary during the course of the Second World War. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 23. Chapters: Amy Johnson, Ann Welch, Ann Wood-Kelly, Diana Barnato Walker, Frederic Ives Lord, Helen Harrison-Bristol, Jacqueline Cochran, Jadwiga Pi sudska, Jane Winstone, Jim Mollison, Joan Hughes, John Cobb (racing driver), Leonard Pagliero, Lettice Curtis, Luis Fontés, Marion Alice Orr, Maureen Dunlop de Popp, Nadia Russo, Pauline Gower, Philip Wills, Wal Handley, William Lindsay Everard. Excerpt: Jacqueline Cochran (May 11, 1906 August 9, 1980) was a pioneer American aviator, considered to be one of the most gifted racing pilots of her generation. She was an important contributor to the formation of the wartime Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) and Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). Jackie as a child c. 1908Jacqueline Cochran, born Bessie Lee Pittman in the Florida Panhandle, was the youngest of the five children of Mary (Grant) and Ira Pittman, a skilled millwright who moved from town to town setting up and reworking saw mills. While her family was not rich, Cochran's childhood living in small-town Florida was similar to those in most other families of that time and place. Contrary to some accounts, there was always food on the table and she was not adopted, as she often claimed. Bessie Pittman married Robert Cochran, a young aircraft mechanic from the nearby naval base at Pensacola, at an early age. They were married in Blakeley, Georgia on November 13, 1920. She gave birth to Robert Cochran Jr. four months later. The couple and child moved to Miami where they lived for four years. Filing for divorce, Cochran moved back to northwest Florida, settling in DeFuniak Springs, where her parents were then living. Not quite five years old, Robert Cochran Jr. died a tragic death after he set his clothes on fire while playing alone in the backyard. Cochran then became a hairdresser and got a job in Pensacola, eventually winding up in New York City. There, she used her looks and driving personality to get a job at a prestigious salon at Saks Fifth Avenue. Somewhere along the line, she chose to change her name from Mrs Bessie Cochran to Miss Jackie Cochran. Although Cochran denied her family and her past, she remained in touch with her family and provided for them over the years. Some of her family even moved to her ranch in California after she remarried. However, they were instructed to always say they were her adopted family. Cochran apparently wanted to hid.

This is a story of the Air Transport Auxiliary, a civilian organisation which during the 1939-45 war, took over the task of ferrying RN and RAF aircraft from the factories to the airfields, thus releasing Service pilots for more active duties. The book takes as its theme the story of how women pilots came to be employed by the ATA and how they progressed from flying Tiger Moths to four-engined bombers. The story takes in the work of the ATA as a whole, including its ground support organisation. It describes in some detail the training, day-to-day work and the aircraft flown by 'The Forgotten Pilots'.

The Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF), whose members were invariably referred to as Waafs (pronounced / wæfs/), was the female auxiliary of the Royal Air Force during World War II, established in 1939. At its peak strength, in 1943, WAAF numbers exceeded 180,000, with over 2,000 women enlisting per week. A Women's Royal Air Force had existed from 1918 to 1920. The WAAF was created on 28 June 1939, absorbing the forty-eight RAF companies of the Auxiliary Territorial Service which had been formed since 1938. Conscription of women did not begin until 1941. It only applied to those between 20 and 30 years of age and they had the choice of the auxiliary services or factory work.
