Zustand: Nuevo. JUAN BENET.

AUTHOR: Keith Castellain Douglas (1920-1944), the war poet and prose writer, was born in Kent, brought up near Cranleigh, Surrey, and educated at Christs Hospital and Merton College, Oxford. At the outbreak of the Second World War he volunteered for the army, was trained at Sandhurst and Wickwar, and in 1941 was posted to Palestine. The history of his time in North Africa is told in his memoir Alamein to Zem Zem (1946). He returned to England in 1943 and in 1944 was sent to France. There he was killed in action in Normandy four days after the D-day landings. Considered one of the foremost English poets of World War II, he is best remembered for poems describing his experiences as a tank commander in North Africa. These works are distinguished from those of most well-known poets of the world wars by their detached, reportorial style and avoidance of the traditional rhetoric of patriotism or protest. While largely unknown at the time of his death, Douglass poetry has been praised by such prominent English poets and critics as Geoffrey Hill, Ted Hughes, and Roy Fuller, who declared Douglas unarguably the finest English war poet to come out of the Second World War. Critic Desmond Graham stated, Perhaps the only poet of his generation to build successfully on the achievement of Wilfred Owen and Isaac Rosenberg, he is regarded as the finest British war poet of World War II and, by many, the finest poet of his generation. BOOK RESUME: Alamein to Zem Zem consists of an account of the tank-fighting at Alamein and the offensive that finally drove the Germans out of Africa and into the sea. It is written in a highly charged, violent descriptive prose, powerfully contrived but sufficiently serious to convey the humour, the pathos and the literal beauty of that dead world of tanks, sand, scrub and human corpses. It is throughout the work of a poet, and the only book of the late war comparable in descriptive power and intelligence to the books of Remarque, Sassoon and Blunden which spoke in similar terms of 1914-1918.

FIRST EDITION, frontispiece and 2 further colour-printed plates by the author along with several text illustrations by the same, pages browned as usual, pp. 141, xvi, 8vo, original quarter red cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt with a spot at head and slight rubbing at tips, grey boards with a couple of spots, corners pushed, very faint partial browning to free endpapers with contemporary ownership inscription to flyleaf, good. A nice copy of a scarce book, published posthumously. The author had attended Merton College, Oxford, where Edmund Blunden was among his tutors, at the end of the previous decade - in the ODNB, Jon Stallworthy remarks that this book 'rendered the war in the western desert as graphically as Blunden's Undertones of War (1928) had depicted life and death on the western front'. With a sixteen page appendix of poems by the author.
