Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, based on machine learning algorithms and big-data-powered systems, can perform sophisticated tasks such as driving cars, analyzing medical data, and evaluating and executing complex financial transactions - often without active human control or supervision. Algorithms also play an important role in determining retail pricing, online advertising, loan qualification, and airport security. In this work, Martin Ebers and Susana Navas bring together a group of scholars and practitioners from across Europe and the US to analyze how this shift from human actors to computers presents both practical and conceptual challenges for legal and regulatory systems. This book should be read by anyone interested in the intersection between computer science and law, how the law can better regulate algorithmic design, and the legal ramifications for citizens whose behavior is increasingly dictated by algorithms.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Case Study from the year 2023 in the subject Computer Science - Internet, New Technologies, grade: 1,0, Charles University in Prague (Faculty of Social Sciences), course: Security and Technology, language: English, abstract: This paper tries to answer the question, how the LA Police Department uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) algorithms to profile criminality. Can these algorithms always be fair and impartial In today¿s society, we are constantly surrounded by artificial intelligence, especially by algorithms that try to profile us to predict our future behaviour. These algorithms are deeply embedded in our daily lives, whether we are watching Netflix, using Amazon music or do online shopping, they try to present us with suggestions to get us more involved with the platform to spend more time there and therefore more money. But these algorithms are not only operated by business companies alone, they are also implemented with public policy providers and law enforcement agencies, like police forces.First, the author gives a detailed explanation of how these algorithms work, then he lists examples in which areas police forces might use these algorithms, such as facial recognition software and making suggestions about the sentencing of criminals. However, the paper also discusses critique of the use of technology by law enforcement. Many ascribe these algorithms a certain bias, especially racially, having mainly been trained on a dataset, which in itself is biased. The next chapter contains the author's methodology, which he then applies to his case study about the LA Police Department in the last part of his paper.
Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Technology generally becomes faster and cheaper over time. Computers follow Moore's Law, doubling in power while halving in price. Yet, in the realm of life-saving medicine, the exact opposite is happening. 'Eroom's Law' (Moore spelled backward) highlights a terrifying economic reality: the cost of discovering and developing a new drug doubles roughly every nine years.Despite massive advancements in artificial intelligence, genome sequencing, and automated chemical screening, the pharmaceutical industry is suffering from crippling stagnation. The hidden bottlenecks are not scientific, but systemic. Hyper-cautious regulatory environments, the exhaustion of 'low-hanging fruit' in basic biology, and the astronomical financial burden of late-stage clinical trials have ground innovation to a halt. This text meticulously deconstructs the multi-billion-dollar gamble of modern pharmacology. You will trace the logistical hurdles of bringing a single molecule to market, the corporate strategy of acquiring smaller biotech startups rather than innovating, and the systemic inefficiencies threatening the future of global healthcare.Step inside the boardrooms of the medical industry. Understand the brutal economic math that dictates which diseases get cured and why the golden age of drug discovery may be behind us.

Professor Elena Esposito. follows the social communication theory of her mentor Niklas Luhmann. pointing out that digital technologies such as machine learning are not artificial intelligence. but artificial communication. It is misleading to make such an analogy between algorithms and human intel.
