James Weldon Johnson (June 17, 1871 - June 26, 1938) was an American author, educator, lawyer, diplomat, songwriter, and civil rights activist. Johnson is best remembered for his leadership within the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), where he started working in 1917, being chosen as the first black executive secretary of the organization, effectively the operating officer.[1] He served in that position from 1920 to 1930. He was first known for his writing, which includes poems, novels, and anthologies collecting both poems and spirituals of black culture.

Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good+. Carl Van Vechten Miguel Covarrubias (illustrator). Early Reprint. Large 8vo. Pp. 418. Frontis. photo port. by Carl Van Vechten. Illustrated throughout with black and white photography and a caricature of Johnson by Miguel Covarrubias. Index. Bound in full black cloth with Johnson's signature stamped in gilt on front cover, gilt lettering stamped on spine. A few pages were roughly opened, leaving jagged edges to a few leaves. Only one affects text, and barely so, on an index page. In the pictorial dust jacket,age-toned and price-clipped, that has a few old tape repairs on the verso, and with chips at head and tail of spine. The poignant reminiscences of the eminent scholar and statesman, which provide a rich, comprehensive assessment of the state of African-American life in his era, 1871-1938. Includes details on the effort to wrest legislative control of lynching from Southern states by enacting Federal laws outlawing the practice. Johnson notes that during his tenure at the NAACP, beginning 1919, lynchings were not as numerous as in previous years, but that the increasing barbarous manner was that of inhuman savagery. An attractive copy. Dust jacket is now protected in a clear, removable, archival sleeve.
