As a young architect in 1925, Aalto wrote, ôThe only proper goal of architecture is: build naturally. DonÆt overdo it. DonÆt do anything without good reason. Everything superfluous turns ugly with time.ö This requirement that Aalto set for architecture was beautifully realized in his own residential and office building which was completed in 1936. A marvelous guide to AaltoÆs creative streak, in its most personal manifestation., English/ Finnish, Year1999, Illust. B/W31, Illust. Color, ISBN 9529845987, Code 4544. In 1954-5, Aalto designed a studio building in the Munkkiniemi district of Helsinki in order to ease the space problems in his office. He created an open-plan office with a drawing office in addition to the actual studio itself, in order ôto provide both peace for the individual to work in and the opportunity to work as a group.ö, English/ Finnish, Year1999, Illust. Soft Cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Text in English. 144 pp. The Enso-Gutzeit Headquarters (1959-1962)in Helsinki s considered one of Alvar Aalto's most controversial works. It is also considered a minor work, falling outside the general uderstanding and oppreciation of Aalto's architecture. Many of the themes found in Aalto's most respected works are also found here, but they have not crystalised into meaningful form. Rather than making us look at the world wvith different eyes, the building seems to be something all too familiar, a standard commerciol office building, albeit one with aesthetic pretensions. By the time of the project, Aalto was already o well known public figure in Finland, and this was his mark in the heart of the Finnish civitas. Aalto's response to the sensitive site, a building with a marble-clad modular grid facade, has been considered among other things, ironic, cynical, too abstract, commercial, a child's erector kit, sensitive and poetically severe. Locals know it as the "sokeripala" (the sugar cube). Aalto himself refered to it as a palozzo. In this study the nature of the polemic is anolysed; how Aaito's orchitectural style could be praised in one context and criticised in this one. The building is also anolysed formolly, showing how it fits into the site context and Aalto's oeuvre, parficularly in regard to his response to the city.

HelsinkiÆs House of Culture, consisting of a concert hall, office-building, and lecture wing, represents a turning point in AaltoÆs architecture. He masterfully combines both sculptural cubism and unconstrained plasticity of form. As this building is sandwiched between traffic and nature, Aalto appropriately used two kinds of form: organic and rational. A poignant introduction to AaltoÆs notable free-form red brick buildings of the 1950s., English/Finnish, Year2000, Illust. B/W30, Illust. Color, ISBN 9525371018, Code 4539. Near fine, bilingual Finnish/English, illustrated with black and white photographs and architectural drawings. We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. Stringer experimented with his own glazes and firing techniques, and wrote a book on Raku, becoming a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association, editing the association's journal for a time and exhibiting widely as well as lecturing at home and abroad.
