Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. Second Edition. First Printing. Publisher's glossy wraps. Abbie Hoffman was born November 30, 1936, in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he grew up. He graduated from Brandeis University in 1958, and received a Master's Degree in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1960. After abandoning a career in clinical psychology, Abbie became a field secretary for the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1963, working on civil rights projects in Georgia, Mississippi and New England. In 1966, he established Liberty House, a retail chain selling goods of the Poor People's Corporation in Mississippi. Also in 1966, he worked as the coordinator for the Worcester, Massachusetts area in the Senatorial campaign of Thomas Boylston Adams, the first state-wide anti-Vietnam-war campaign. A leading activist of the antiwar movement, he was one of the architects of the Pentagon demonstration and the convention protests in Chicago in 1968. Arrested more than forty times, he stood trial in a score of precedent-setting cases, including that of the Chicago Eight. He has written four books, Revolution for the Hell of It, Woodstock Nation, Steal This Book, and Vote! In March, 1974, facing drug charges in a case in which he claims he was innocent, he became a fugitive. He continued to do protest work underground under the alias of Barry Freed, and in recognition of his work regarding the St. Lawrence River, was called before Congress to testify. Abbie resolved to come up from underground, and in 1980 gave himself up, was retried, sentenced, but after one year, was freed on parole due to hundreds of letters on his behalf. In 1989, he allegedly committed suicide under odd and rather suspicious circumstances. Until that time, he spent his remaining years working on a variety of issues from preserving the environment to protesting U.S. Involvement in Latin America. Despite the best efforts of the government, and of those who opposed him politically, he lost neither his passion for social justice nor the courage to participate in the democracy he cherished. . Volume shows mild wear around edges, front cover creased, else near fine. VERY GOOD. . Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall. (xii), 209 pp.

Buch Erstausgabe Signiert
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition/first printing hardcover with dustjacket, inscribed and SIGNED by Hoffman ("Abbie"), with an interesting autograph letter signed by Hoffman ("chicot") laid in. The book is comprised of letters between Hoffman and his wife while he was underground. This is the hardcover issue, near fine in dust jacket, inscribed/signed by the author and with an ALS laid in to a Mark Jaffe (apparently a publishing representative). The inscription on the front free endpaper reads: "To Mark Jaffe: / one of the / 'Very Special People'/ the only jew in the / publishing business / with two khups!/ luv / Abbie." The letter goes into detail about publication rights for this book and exhorts Jaffe to remember: "NO publisher ever lost money on a book I wrote. That's a fact you can ask Ed Doctorow or Jason Epstein or Barney Rosset. The publicity will be thrown in free. A press conference on the moon. Fingerprinting parties in Brentano's." (For Hoffman's next book, the publisher did give "fingerprinting parties" at various bookstores where Hoffman gave readings and signed and fingerprinted his books.) The letter is on Amsterdam Marriott Hotel letterhead and begins, "High Mark: Guess who! Right. It was great seeing you in Amsterdam last night." The letter is signed "luv chicot". (It would make sense that Hoffman would see himself as Chicot: "Chicot (c. 1540 1591), real name Jean-Antoine d'Anglerais, was the jester of King Henry III of France and later Henry IV. He was sharp-tongued and very cunning, and spoke with the king without formalities".) The book is near fine in a very good dust jacket; the letter folded for mailing otherwise fine. Blue boards, gilt spine lettering, 8 1/2 x 5 3/4 inches, 206 pp. (K059). Signed by Author(s).
