This is a multifaceted discussion by Julian Monson Sturtevant (1805-1886), an American author, professor, and clergyman. He also served as the 2nd president of Illinois College from 1844-1876. Sturtevant addresses a number of different subjects in his discussion. He begins with a discussion about two verses from Scripture, Matthew 10:5-6 which are about the twelve apostles being sent to Israel to spread the Gospel. Sturtevant delves into the meaning of these verses and interprets that the verses are broader in scope and do not exclusively refer to the Israelites or Jewish people. That is, Sturtevant believes these verses convey a message of universal salvation and for missionaries to cater to all people. Sturtevant then addresses the subject of American emigration moving East to West in the United States and considers it in relation to the goals of the American Home Missionary Society (AHM Society or AHMS). Sturtevant then discusses slavery which he is adamantly opposed to. He decries the fifteen slave-holding states in the South and says they are suppressing the missionary work of the AHMS. He briefly juxtaposes these states with the sixteen free states of the North and later (toward the end of the address) predicts that the institution of slavery will fail. However, Sturtevant spends much of the remainder of his discussion about American emigration and population growth in the country. Sturtevant projects that in year 2000, the population of the U.S. will be 1,000 million. While appearing concerned at times of how space and resources can accommodate an increasing population, he views American society as an exemplar of success and prosperity. According to Sturtevant, the causes of American emigration and its population growth are the "purity and moral dignity" of the family (he criticizes the Roman Catholic Church and its practice of celibacy among its clergy); the educated, civilized nature of the American public; and the "public spirit" of American emigrants and pioneers. He believes these three causes are rooted in the Protestant (Puritan) religion of the founding fathers. Please note: Sturtevant makes several discriminatory remarks throughout his address about non-English people including his argument that non-English people are prone to barbarism and his view discouraging immigration to the U.S. from any country other than England (he is very supportive of Anglo-Saxon Protestant culture). The American Home Missionary Society was a Protestant missionary society founded in 1826 following a merger between the United Domestic Missionary Society and other missionary societies from New England. Its mission was to help churches in financial need and spread the Gospel to low-income communities. In 1893, it became a part of the National Council of Congregational Churches.

Softcover. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. 34pp. Bound in decorated yellow wrappers, sewn. 9" x 5.75" Sturtevant was then president of Illinois College. Here, he discusses emigration to the 16 non-slaveholding States. "For obvious reasons.we shall leave out of our estimate the colored population of the Free States. The free white population of the Free States was by the census of 1850, in round numbers, 13,000,000." Re the American Home Missionary Society, "Its function is to follow such families to the heart of the Western wilderness, to the banks of the Columbia, and the gold fields of California. The very conception of a migration to Kansas, or Minnesota, or Oregon implies knowledge, resources, self-reliance in a very high degree. If an uncultivated, uneducated, laboring population does emigrate, it will not carry civilization with it.Its colonies will languish for ages in ignorance and barbarism."
