Small 8vo, approximately 160 x 95 mm, 6¼ x 3¾ inches, 2 engraved plates of fish, pages: [8], 1-326, [10] - Table, and last page has Advertisment for fishing tackle etc., and Errata, bound in full modern panelled calf with blind decoration to covers, maroon gilt lettered label between raised bands to spine, gilt date at foot of spine has been mistakenly done as 1698 instead of 1689, new endpapers, edges red. Title page dusty and with small repairs to edges and corners, page 216 has a corner neatly repaired which has run into the text and affects the odd letter but easily understood, small repair to bottom margin of 1 plate, not affecting images, tiny nicks to several margins, a few small repairs to margins not affecting text, pale age-browning throughout, bookplate to verso title page (Charles King), tiny ink splash to 1 lower margin, otherwise a very good copy. Recently bound in full old style calf, red label, "Chetham takes rank among one of the original writers of the sport, he is indebted indeed to his forerunners but acknowledges it". Bound in modern full brown calf, hubbed spine, gilt spine title, new endpapers, faint stamp of Chicago Museum of Natural History and their small perforated stamp on the title page. "The first edition was published anonymously.one of the original writers on the sport. He is indebted, indeed, to his forerunners, but acknowledges it; he improves on their systems.He is never servile, nor plagiaristic, always honest, sometimes a little surly" (Westwood & Satchell). Information on rods, lines, hooks, floats, baits, methods and times for fishing for trout, salmon, ruff, roach, gudgeon, dace, chub, eel, pike, flounder, angling with the float, ledger bait, natural fly, fishing with the artificial fly, fly tying materials, recommended flies, and dressings for 64 flies. Most quotable is one of his fish baits: "Take Man's Fat and Cat's Fat.Mummy finely powdred. Cummin-seed.Oyl of Annise and Spike.Civen two grains, and camphor four grains, make an ointment according to art.annoint 8 inches of the line next the hook. and keep it in a pewter box". 2½ pp of errata follow the text. Very good.
