Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1981 signed and inscribed first edition Te Aroha Borough Council (Te Aroha, New Zealand), 8 1/2 x 11 7/8 inches tall pale green cloth hardbound in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, copiously illustrated with black-and-white photographs, 125 pp. Minor rubbing and edgewear to covers. Slight bumping to upper edge of front and rear covers, with resultant very slight crease to the upper edges of a couple of pages. Spine very slightly cocked. Prior owner name and inscription to half title page. Nicely signed by the author and signed and inscribed by the editor on the title page. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a very good dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. Uncommon. OCLC (No. 154650231) locates only 11 copies at institutions worldwide, all in New Zealand. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~WW~ Te Aroha is a rural town in the Waikato region of New Zealand with a population of 3,906 people in the 2013 census, best known for its mineral hot springs, its fine examples of historic and attractive Victorian buildings as well as being a center for a highly productive dairy district. However, the town also has an interesting history, ably related in this nicely illustrated history. After tracing the historic association of the Maori people to the district, Kingsley-Smith follows the European influence there, beginning in the 1830s when the first misionaries visited the area, travelling up the Waihou River from Thames. The river was the main transport artery to the settlement and district, before the arrival of rail and adequate roading. Like many early New Zealand settlements, Te Aroha experienced the goldfields impact, with prospecting and mining beginning in early 1880, but by the the turn of the century the 'rush' was over and subsequent revivals were short-lived. The author follows developments covering community and civic aspects as well as those of business and commerce, education, cultural, recreational and religious organizations and prominant personalities.
