The aim was to find out what parents of students enrolled in the initial years of primary school and their children, the students, believe about not failing at school. This qualitative fieldwork took place in two public schools in the municipality of Taquaruçu do Sul - RS. It was based on the assumption that there was a need to give a voice to two segments of the school community - parents and students - who are not usually heard. Continued progression still seems to be poorly understood and unaccepted by parents, who see it as a way of making things easier for pupils, creating in them the understanding that they don't need to study because automatic approval is guaranteed for everyone.
