Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. Bound in finely woven burgundy cloth stamped brightly in gold on the front boards and on the spine. Very clean, crisp and tight throughout. With dark blue topstaining. The stated "Thirteenth Printing" in the complete, colorful George Salter dust jacket with the price of $15.00 at the top of the inside front flap. The crisp dust jacket shows light wear at the corners and tiny nicks at the top of the spine ends. This copy has been personally inscribed by Ayn Rand: "To John W. Wheeler--Cordially-- Ayn Rand 12/12/72" on the half title page. A very handsome copy of this dystopian novel, signed and inscribed by Rand. Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's fourth and last novel; it was also her longest, and the one she considered to be her magnum opus in the realm of fiction writing. Atlas Shrugged includes elements of science fiction, mystery, and romance, and it contains Rand's most extensive statement of Objectivism in any of her works of fiction. The book explores a dystopian, increasingly socialist, post-economic collapse United States where many of society's most prominent and successful industrialists begin to disappear, abandoning their empires in response to aggressive new regulations. Without their support, many of the country's vital industries begin to collapse. The title is a reference to Atlas, a Titan of Ancient Greek mythology, described in the novel as "the giant who holds the world on his shoulders," although in Greek mythology he holds up the sky, not the earth. (Robert Mayhew, Essays on Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged). "Man's life is not the life of a mindless brute, of a looting thug or a mooching mystic--not life by means of force or fraud, but life by means of achievement" (Atlas Shrugged). Octavo, original blue cloth, original slipcase. Bound in blue cloth boards with gilt lettering, measuring 6" x 8.75". Signed limited special anniversary edition of the influential novel meant to showcase Rand's Objectivist philosophy. Unlike most philosophers, Rand chose to use novels as a popular vehicle to explain her theory of "rational individualism." ATLAS SHRUGGED has impacted the thinking of prominent American conservatives and libertarians from Alan Greenspan to Peter Thiel. A nice copy of this increasingly uncommon edition. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original full blue cloth, gilt-lettered front board and spine. Blue topstain, blue endpapers, fore-edge machine deckle. In original clear glassine and grey-blue paper slipcase. [8], 1168, [1], [3] pages. Signed and numbered by Rand to limitation page, this copy #1278. Slipcase mildly sunned at extremities with some rubbing, chipping to edges. Else entirely sound, uncommon thus. Mylar has tiny chip to rear panel, small tear front top corner, mildly rubbed. Book has former owner bookplate to front endpaper. Touch of rubbing to spine text. Bit of spotting to top edge, likely production error. Overall, clean and bright. Near fine in a very good plus slipcase.

First edition of one of the most influential novels of the twentieth century. Large octavo, original green cloth, frontispiece stamped in gilt, spine stamped in black and gilt. Boldly signed by Ayn Rand on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by George Salter. An exceptional example. âFrom 1943 until its publication in 1957, [Rand] worked on the book that many say is her masterpiece, Atlas Shrugged. This novel describes how a genius named John Galt grows weary of supporting a society of ungrateful parasites and one day simply shrugs and walks away. He becomes an inspiration to like-minded men and women, all of whom eventually follow his example, until society, in its agony, calls them back to responsibility and respect. Again [as with Randâs novel The Fountainhead in 1943] reviews were unsympathetic, and again people bought the bookâ (ANB). The theme of Atlas Shrugged, as Rand described it, is "the role of man's mind in existence." The book explores a number of philosophical themes that Rand would subsequently develop into the philosophy of Objectivism. By 1984 more than five million copies of Atlas Shrugged had been sold, and in a 1991 Library of Congress survey Americans named it second only to the Bible as the book that had most influenced their lives. It is the basis for the trilogy of film adaptations subtitled Part I (2011), Part II (2012), and Part III (2014).

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition, First Printing of Ayn Rand's magnum opus, her hymn to the men and women of unbound mind and unborrowed vision, in a dazzling dust jacket protected in a clamshell box. "I know that I am challenging the cultural tradition of two and one half thousand years," Rand observed at a sales meeting preceding the publication of Atlas Shrugged. Her novel delivers. Presented within a gripping, page-turning story of the "men of the mind" going on strike against an altruist/collectivist society, Rand s novel defines a revolutionary new code of ethics -- "the morality of rational self-interest," she dubbed it -- and validates for the first time a moral defense of capitalism and the political system of America's Founding Fathers. The novel raises and answers questions on the nature, source, and validation of morality. "Why is it immoral to produce a value and keep it, but moral to give it away? And if it is not moral for you to keep a value, why is it moral for others to accept it? If you are selfless and virtuous when you give it, are they not selfish and vicious when they take it? Does virtue consist of serving vice? Is the . . . purpose of those who are good, self-immolation for the sake of those who are evil?" (Atlas Shrugged). In her title essay For the New Intellectual (Random House, 1959), Rand would elaborate: "The world crisis of today is a moral crisis--and nothing less than a moral revolution can resolve it: a moral revolution to sanction and complete the political achievement of the American Revolution." Indeed many commentators refer to Atlas Shrugged as America's Declaration of Moral Independence. "From 1943 until its publication in 1957, [Rand] worked on the book that many say is her masterpiece, Atlas Shrugged. This novel describes how a genius named John Galt grows weary of supporting a society of ungrateful parasites and one day simply shrugs and walks away. Again [as with Rand s novel The Fountainhead in 1943] reviews were unsympathetic, and again, people bought the book" (ANB). Rand s all-time bestseller has now sold more than ten million copies and was named by readers in the Modern Library as the greatest novel of the 20th Century. This copy fine save for a tenderness at the hinge at the title page. Glorious, unclipped, unchipped first issue jacket. Protected in a sturdy leather/cloth custom clamshell box. "Man the rational being has found his spokesman and defender, and has been released from his moral underground. That is the imperishable achievement of Ayn Rand" (Branden, 65).
